1200 Keys

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Topbox, Apr 6, 2018.

  1. I hope this is a quick and easy question. Part (i) I've just put a deposit down on a 2014 Multistrada 1200 (not S) the KTM dealer I'm getting it from says that Ducati supply two keys when new one Smart key for the keyless ignition and one none smart key, both of which fit all three boxes.

Is that true and part (ii) if I wanted another Smart key how much would it be.

Thanks in advance for your help. Cheers TB

  2. speaking to a Ducati dealer comes to mind my friend:upyeah:

  3. The second key has a non powered transponder in it and should have a red plastic top. It is essential should you lose the hands free key and it can be used if your hands free battery dies. Replacement/new hands free keys are not cheap and can only be programmed by a dealer but as XH588 says, they are who you should speak to. Andy

  4. I ruined my hands free key when it went through the wash. The replacement circuitry and programming cost around £120. The casing and physical key was reused.

  5. That’s what I got with my new 17 DVT. I kind of expected two Smart Keys and a back up.

  6. I second that.

  7. The time to buy an extra spare key is when you don't need it. If the day comes when you really do need one, it is too late. Each time I have bought a new Multistrada (three now) I have ordered an extra key at the outset, and got it coded to the handsfree system, just in case. I would recommend any owners to consider doing this - unless they are certain their other keys will never be lost, stolen, or broken.

  11.

  12. It's also always worth getting a dumb key blank and using this to open the seat lock (and petrol cap).
    That way you don't:
    A. Leave your bike parked all day in a London bike bay with the key in the underseat lock
    B. Drive all the way home and discover the key in the lock when you get home.

    (I've done both!)

  13. Hi,

This has happened to me too. I keep forgetting the keys either in the side cases or in the seat lock.

Yesterday, I went to a couple of locksmiths to make a copy of the red key, but unfortunatly their answer was that the key could not be replicated as they did not have the same type of blade

Anyone had any luck replicating a Red key from a DVT bike?

    Thanks

  14. Without the PIN system I’d be very nervous about the keys. As it stands I’m fairly happy I wouldn’t be stranded (PIN start) and always have the traditional spare key at home to get another cut.

  15. The red key has a passive transponder in it. A plain black key can be purchased from your local friendly Ducati dealer for about IIRC £10 but make sure you can get someone to cut it. Most high street key cutting chains will only cut keys that they have sold. Andy

  16. Ordinary high street key cutting chains cannot do this. It needs a specialist locksmith. I sometimes use Locks Eleven in the Grays Inn Road.

  17. Great info!

    Many thanks

  18. I have always had a "dumb" key cut for my Multis, Ducati dealers can supply them (about £10). I use it for petrol cap, top box, panniers and seat release. This way the "Smart" key says in a zipped (and waterproof) trouser pocket and the dumb key is for petrol etc.
It was cut by a specialist independent locksmith as high street locksmith shops often don't have the expensive machine that is needed to cut the blank.

  19. I’ve been quoted the same, found my key was in the pannier and the fob was in my pocket as it broke off in the lock, they would not cover it under warranty and replacement included key, fob, programming ,cutting etc. Bugger!!!!!!

  20. Well I've now taken delivery and while I'm waiting for the insurance and then tax to be verified and implemented I thought I'd just do a final update, before my first ride

When I started this post I thought that for my 2014 bike I would have 2 keys which would be the only option for starting the bike. I now know that the regular key will start the bike if its within 1.5m proximity and the red key will start the bike if its within a few cm's of the "Arial".

Now in addition to this The PIN code is there for when neither key is present. So that's three alternatives for starting. This PIN code idea certainly takes the pressure off the 2 keys :) (but not the boxes)

Apologies to those who knew this all along, but thanks again for everyone who contributed.
