My trusty old Packard Bell (Don't laugh) has finally shuffled off. :frown: I'm now looking for a replacement, I don't do gaming or virtual reality.. I find this one distressing enough! Just need a basic machine that can surf, e-mail and run office without being so slow it pi$$es me off! Any recommendations for both machine and where to buy? Budget of ~£300 Cheers
Err, I think you must mean 750Gb hard disk capacity, as there's no way you'll get a laptop with 750Gb of memory.
Just put a new hamster in it...and spend the rest on the bike! It might sound daft but have a look in tesco's.....they often sell them off, sometimes display models but with a big discount. And when they go Pete tong they just give you a new one no questions asked, no...... oh we'll send it to the manufacturer and leave you without for weeks....like comet, currys and pc world etc.
I think it's my hamster that has broken it... He escaped and has a highly evolved burrowing instinct...
To be honest I like Dell. Have had 3 now, only ever swapped because I wanted to upgrade. Only negative, is the Dell sales method. They sell the lap top, then try to load it up with extended warranties, additional soft ware, printers etc. But, Dell have a factory refurb web site, it's fab. Buy on line, good specs, current machines and 12 month Dell warranty. Works out about 2/3rds of normal price. The stock on the web site can change daily, so, spec up your ideal machine, then keep watching the web site for the right stock to come in.
My toshiba expired on new years eve, and while it ws getting it diagnosed the chap in the indie computer repair shop was telling me that Asus have the best record for quality and reliability.. I bought apple in the end, but asus was his strong view - and he was not trying to sell me one at the time! Just a view/altnative brand to consider or investigate
They stopped a lap dancing club opening on Bognor, oh no now I re-read it it says lap top, not lap dancing, sorry I cannot help.
+1 on the Asus stuff ... I built a PC getting on for ten years ago now and I'm writing this on it, bullet proof is an over-used superlative, so I'll use bomb-proof. It fell off the top of a luton transit once and it powered up fine. Bit slow these days but it suffices. Just check the wi-fi range, not that hot when I looked at an Asus laptop this time last year, but they can be ramped etc, great kit generally.
ASUS appear at the top of quite a number of reliability studies. I really don't want something that is going to go t!ts upward after a flippin year! Boiled my choices down to either ASUS or DELL, a number of goods deals available for refurb'ed machines via Argos out let.... Many thanks
To be fair most of the internals are made by the same manufacturer, and quite a lot are even assembled in the same place just with different badges and maybe a minor spec change so I wouldn't worry too much about branding on a laptop. Its more likely to be obsolete long before it fails these days anyway. I can't see the world of mobile computing being set on fire by the idea of a Destop pc on the roof of a Luton van either
I used to work in that industry and yr right a lot of the internals were generic from Taiwan, I think DELL make thier own over in Ireland, or at least they used to! Says something about my lifestyle.... My sofa is also knackered! Ordered the DELL...Come on postie...!!!
Well, the DELL (refurbished) was faulty out the box...Pad kept sticking/grabbing...! ASUS now on order...In red.of course...
I hate the way none of the stuff lasts... They should resurrect Isambard Kingdon Brunel or Fred Dibnah to design Laptops IMO!
I have an acer netbook running linux Was great to start with now the dratted thing freezes at every opportunity it can I want to throw it out the window grrr
