Anyone on here looked into this properly or better still, had a treatment? There seems to be a few different types and things move on so quickly. Any first hand experience?
I had mine done about 12 years ago now - absolutely fantastic thing to have done. Mine were done by Ultralase in Leeds...at that time they were the most expensive but definitely the go to place I probably paid around 650/750 quid per eye back then... a lot of money back then really. Bugger all now mind. 12 years on - and I've had no issues outside of a minor issue with dry eyes in the first month. I have not even lost my near vision even though I am in my 50's lol. When everyone else is reaching for their reading glasses, I still look cool (well I dont really, I look the same, but I don't need glasses at least)
Brilliant, a great recommendation. It’s good to know it lasts. I’m in Leeds, so will put that place on the list.
I dunno if they are still there tbh. Back then it was either Optimax (not the petrol lol) or Ultralase. The latter being more expensive, but they covered any possible future ops for improvements ( it sometimes is needed) at no extra cost and also any meds needed ( I had eye drops for that month) at no extra cost. With Optimax - that was all extra... Every man and his dog seems to do it now and the costs look to have come down. Unless you have an astigmatism or diabetes, its very straightforward. The op itself, takes seconds, literally seconds. You lie down, he does his stuff and you sit up ... job done They do one eye at a time mind and give you a breather in between
The advice you should be looking for is how your eyesight is likely to change over time. Some laser treatments change the here and now but as your eyes change over time are most definitely not a permanent solution. I had full lens replacement surgery due to an aggressive cataract and even then, the surgeon was concerned that should my myopia continue to affect the shape of my eyes, the synthetic lens chosen would not guarantee a glasses free future. Many years ago, I met one of the very first people to have what was then pioneering surgery and she wished most fervently to have never had it done. For some, it has changed their lives, for others, it has not been quite so life changing. Andy
Surgical treatments vary depending on the type of vision defect you are wanting to correct, age of patient etc. Lots of information available & worth discussing with an ophthalmologist: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-body/laser-eye-surgery/ https://www.allaboutvision.com/visionsurgery/other.htm
Luckily I have pin sharp close up vision and can still just drive legally without glasses too, although distance is a little blurry - I would be as scared getting my eyes lasered as @finm visiting a flying dentist
In the late 80's I had the cutting around the eye (Radial Keratotomy), as I wasn't suitable for laser.... Glaucoma and Scuba --- apparently... worked great for about 15 years. Use a diamond tipped knife to cut the eye. If I stare at the sky and you look closely you can see the scars around my iris..... I show people and it grosses them out... at least I think that's what it is. Now I wear glasses for both distance and close up.... can't see a thing without them, hence I can stomach time around Elsie, Loz and Chizel.
My neighbour is one of the UKs top opthalmic specialist surgeons. I have investigated my condition with his help and because of my prescription I can't have laser; it would be the knife. Even so, I would probably still need glasses after the operations for some correction. So, I would rather pay for expensive glasses and contact lenses, then go through the very costly ops and still have to wear them.
You are a self confessed total coward when it comes to the driller killer! Fin's not been for years... Spoiler: See
My father had this work carried out a few years ago,he had been wearing glasses since his school days and for me now it's very strange speaking with him as something is missing, but the most important thing is he's now a very happy pensioner with no side effects.
Some peeps may have issues over time with some procedures, that is always how things are. Its the same with all operations. Most are fine, a few peeps have issues. Having checked the dates, I now know I actually had both my eyes lasered 17 years ago and my vision has not altered since. I can see as well now as when I sat up after the operation. I am at that late middle age stage ( or old as its called) where vision usually does go to the shitter be it near or far vision - but mine is AOK tho Maybe its like most things we buy, you get what you pay for ? I paid a lot for my treatment at the time but have had a good product ever since If I needed it again, I would do so without hesitation... but I don't
My glasses cost about £200 a pair. I have 1.74 index lenses. Contact lenses are less. But the knife ops would be about £4k each via the Nuffield hospital. My neighbour would do the job, but as he is the top man, I expect it to cost. Pay the money for your choice IMO.
