Hi all, was wondering if anybody had any recent experience of travelling by car to Belfast from mainland UK? my eldest, results dependant, is off to QU Belfast and I am going to take him and his stuff over. first glance at the Stena site for Liverpool to Belfast overnight sailings and it is coming in at nearly £400!! are there any other operators going across the Irish Sea? I guess my other options are (a) drive to Holyhead, ferry to Dublin/Dunlaoghaire then drive up, (b) drive to Stranraer and get ferry across to Belfast. (a) involves getting to holyhead, then on the other side circumnavigating Dublin from south to north (I believe the motorway from then is pretty free flowing, usually) (b) involves a trek from Liverpool to Stranraer (guessing about 5-6 hours drive each way) anybody with knowledge and experience that knows of a reasonable and reasonably cheap way to get across the Irish Sea with a car and 2 person onboard? thanks, Pete
...I had a similar shock recently (my youngest was planning to drive over with a couple of his mates to stay at a friends0.....cost of ferry is scandalous - ended up cheaper to fly. Given you need to shift stuff it probably doesnt help....although you could cost up a courier for the stuff and then fly....
thanks Gordon, flights are ridculously cheap in comparison. to be honest, never really thought about the courier option, I guess it would need a fair bit of coordination as to what arrives where, when and making sure somebody is able to receive the shipment. Cheers, Pete

just found the Liverpool - Dublin route is way cheaper (£273 vs £477), so going to have a chat with the eldest later and see what seems best. thanks for the pointer Exige - will probably use sometihng like that to send him food parcels over the next 3 years! Pete
Welcome to our world , they have us norn iron residents over a barrel. Anyone looking to travel from englandshire to frog/ snail land get better deals due to the competition of ferried trains etc but over here we are fecked. Only thing worse than the Irish sea ferrys are the robbing cunts on the steam packet.
