Loose Gear Shift Lever

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by d.man, Jun 26, 2014.

  1. Hi all
Since taking the engine out of my 95 m600 for a much needed clean up and repaint; it has now developed a weird and intermittent problem with the gears - namely when down shifting and only in 2nd and 1st.
Occasionally, when I downshift, when getting to 2nd or 1st, the gear lever is loose (freely move up and down). After a few seconds, the lever reverts back to normal. If I'm in 2nd, I cannot select 1st which is an issue.
    Any thoughts?

    Cheers all

  2. Sounds like there is something wrong with the gear lever return spring. It normally keeps the lever centralised but if it breaks or looses it springiness down changing can be difficult as the lever doesn't come back up again after the previous downshift.

  3. Thanks for the info Derek.
Am I right in thinking that crank case cover needs removing to check/replace spring?

  4. Yes, and you need to take the flywheel off to to replace it.

  5. Am going to have a look at the spring soon.
The Haynes manual advises to replace the crank case gasket; however, I have read you can't get them any longer and need to use a sealant?
    Any advice/recommendations?
    Cheers

  6. Three Bond is about the best, but most silicon based gasket glue is OK...........I use Hylomar Clear.........

You can get gasket sets if you search for them and some dealers may still have them...........or you could of course make a gasket.....easy peasy if you have the right material.

NB! When you have undone the flywheel...........(sweat, blood and tears)...............make sure you use twice as much sweat, blood and tears doing it up again.......

  7. As ever - thanks for the advice. Will have a look for some sealant.
Will make sure flywheel is done up good and proper!! Assuming I can shift the b*****r in the first place!!

  8. Ok - removed crankcase cover, gasket mostly came off but cannot budge the alternator rotor nut.
Have applied max pressure to rear brake and it is in a high gear (5th) - but it still slips.

Any suggestions? Am not going to jam anything in the gears - think that would cause more problems.

Love the way the Haynes manual simply says 'remove alternator nut'!!

    Cheers all
