Managed to get the Monster out on Sunday for a quick blast. Seems to be suffering electrical gremlins. Started up and engine revs to 3000 rpm after 5 mins went back down. Whilst riding speedo works but all electrics have stopped working, no indicators, headlight, horn, pass light and indicator lights on dash not working. I stopped the bike, turned off then restarted again and all was fine. Get a few miles down the road and it happens again. Any ideas?
I would check every electrical connection. Take off the seat, prop up the tank ( I assume yours props up) Disconnect battery Go through every connector you can find, pull them apart, clean out and squirt a bit of WD40 or whatever in and re-connect then move on to the next one. Clean up any corrosion. Check any earths too. The 3000 rpm start sounds like maybe the Throttle Position Sensor does not know where it is... The lack of lights and indicators could be a duff earth...
The M1100S has an idle control valve (ICV or stepper motor) to manage the idle speed. These can fail. whenever I get electrical gremlins I always change the fuel pump/coil/injector relay as these cause no end of electrical faults.
Well, took tank off, checked all connections but no joy. funny thing is everything works without engine running. As soon as engine running the indicators, headlight, dash indicator lights all stop working. Hit the kill switch and all works fine again
tinkering with bike today, the gremlins are still there. I keep getting Hi Batt error - Could this be a problem with the rectifier? When I check the voltage on the dash as soon as I rev the engine the volts go over 15v and all the lights go off. If I keep full beam on revving the engine will not take it over 15v and all is fine. The bike has been on an optimate over the winter, could this just be a knackered battery?
A brand new rectifier has been fitted. Problem solved! Not a bad price considering it was genuine Ducati only £86
Hey Jayos, I'm guessing this is my old M1100S - sorry to hear you're having the odd gremlin, but overall it sounds like you and the bike are having fun, and good to know you still have it. I've just got back on two wheels for the first time since I sold the Monster, and got an '09 1098 - and loving it, and it's surprisingly similar to the 1100S, maybe a bit less comfortable Those new fangled wet clutch Ducatis just aren't the same... Cheers!
Hi Snips, Bike has been fantastic. The odd gremlin is to be expected. Adds to the Monster's character. Great to hear you back on two wheels - I love the 1098 but would have top be a second bike for me (The wife would never allow it)
