hey chaps, would i need to modify any thing else on my 748r to fit a magnezium swing arm? or will it bolt straight in?? cheers.
If your head stock has two positions, I would advise you change the steering angle to the steeper of the two to maintain the wheel base as the mag alloy arm is approximately 1" longer and was develpoed to quieten down the handling on the track. Andy
i would advise you not to change the steering angle...........unless you fit 30 27 or 25mm offset yokes..... if you fit the longer arm you'll need the shock sorted to go with it.....and the relevent rocker...let alone a longer chain and chain rubs that are getting rare. Plus if you fit the mag arm with the RS pivot bearings then youll need to fit a spacer on the right hand side mount on the frame....
when you say get the shock sorted what do you mean bud? the bike has ohlins front and rear if that makes a difference.
its a longer swing arm or lever as it really is so the leverage on the shock is greater so the shock needs to work in a different range internally ....a bit like the effort required to colse a door by pushing on its outer edge verses pushing on it near the hinges plus to maximise the longer arm you really want what is referred to as a "flat" rocker
quite a bit of work then,do they make that much difference or is it just something to talk about in the pub?? ive always liked the idea of having a mag swing arm though, the bike has mag/carbon wheels aswell so it would go with them quite well!!!
depends if 2000 quid for the full set up is a lot of money to you or not. On the road - not required at all and magnesium is not easy to take care of.
I was looking at changing the rocker link thing after what I've read, and even that means modding the shock and some other bits. So a £100 part turns into a £400 cost overall. Sounds like mag arm a similar thing
Which is why I recently advertised a mag alloy swing arm to include the Corse rocker, Ohlins RS shock absorber and a road eccentric hub. All of which were professionally fitted by a Ductai specailist to my 748sp without any problems whatsoever.
well ive totally rebuilt my bike and it has got some real trick stuff on it,i just think a mag swing arm would finish it off nicely, nothing actually wrong with the original swing arm though, bike goes to a lot of shows but i do enjoy riding it on our pot holed roads!!
Despite andyb's earlier post, it is still my opinion that you would only fit the longer racing swing arm so you can quicken the steering without upsetting the overall balance of the handling especially on the track as with the 748sp the kit was fitted to. Andy
changing from the 24.5 to the 23.5 is not the way to go unless you fit better offset yokes.............at 24.5 you have 97mm of trail.........TRAIL the most important figure on a bikes set up.......going to the 23.5 supposed "race" setting you immediately lose 6mm of trail down to 91. This is a very poor number, considering someone like James Toseland a proper 'racer', reportedly ran with 110mm of trail. The only way to get it back and keep the 23.5 is to fit offset yokes. As the std ones are 36mm going to 30mm, a more commonly available yoke, immediately gains the 6mm back, but you're only back to where the bike started from 97mm. There are plenty of way to sort a ducati suspension but generally one thing goes hand in hand with another, and with Ducati that generally involves money. Ask yourself, if the 23.5 is so the way forward, why did ducati remove this adjustment from the latter models?
What do you mean? if they make the production bikes with it, the WSB bikes can be like it...they wouldnt take away something if it was so important.. PM me an email address and ill sent you a bit of light reading if your interested?
I had a look in the Ducati accessories cataloguefrom 2002 and the Magnesium rear swindarm kit is listed and a picture of all the bits69922041A. Also with this you normally did the front as well with the Magnesium triple clamp and top yoke kit. 69922001A It doesn't stop there because you need the longer Corse chain guard which is separate to the hugger... As Andy said it's Ducati and Corse which means expensive lapman
may be you won't know until you get it... there have been many years of racing and RS development in the 748/916/996/998 series .. if it's some one off they (Corse) did as a test there may be no telling or finding parts... i' ve stayed away from RS stuff for this very reason... Nothing ever fits without changing that whole part of the bike. change one bolt and your away for 3K.... i wouldn't feel very secure on a 12 year old mag swingarm without knowing 100% of its history, which you will never know..
yeah thats true, maybe il keep my standard one on there then,at least i know its going to be safe,as i only use it on the road.
