Maybe I Should Stick To Makrami

  1. Instead of trying to work on the bike!!!!!

Not a great day with the 1098 yesterday.

Thought I'd check the air filter, I've got a BMC in it. So nose cone off, and then try to get the RHS air tube off, rear cap screw just spins, and the tube is still firmly on the airbox. Ok I'll check it from the LHS, same fffff'n thing.

Managed to prize the tube open a little with the rear bolt still in place filter not too bad, but ideally I'd have liked to get it out to clean, but that wasn't going to happen.

So nose cone back on, well not quite.

First attempt can't get the bottom bolt on the underside to locate, this was due to the inner piece fouling the grommet. Nose cone back off. Get the bottom bolt in so that leaves the 2 mounts on the top. Misthread one of the top bolts and didn't notice, although it did feel a bit stiff and I was getting fed up and pissed off by this point, but carried on, against my own rule of walking away. Apply ratchet to bolt and turn...................Kerrrrrak!!! and I've sheared the mounting bracket on the fairing.

You can see the mount as it should be on the left and the where I sheared it off on the right

    Sheared mount....................bugger

So is it repairable? If so what can I use?

If not any recommendations for where to get a nice carbon nose cone from?

May as well if a repair is not going to cut the mustard.

Bike is black so a carbon nose cone could just bolt on.

Another thing is I'll need to put on a new number board which was a right front bottom of a job too.............................knitting has got be easier!!!

  2. If JB Weld doesn't work...............

M8 (or M10, depending on what size you need) bolt.....drill down the centre and tap to the correct thread.

Piece of ally tube (or similar) cut to make two angle spacer washers to give it the right angle in the fairing.........put one either side of the bolt an a nut either side as well (File the flats off the outside one to make it round)...........cut bolt to appropriate length...........loctite all.

    .....paint it black...............

Another bodge from the stable of AL.

  3. JB Plastic bond on order

Hope it works, Al's solution looks like a lot of work (to me) if it doesn't, but as I was the asshole who broke it maybe I shouldn't be whinging

    Thanks guys

  4. You could try to plastic weld it first. Then the job weld around the outside. That'll make it stronger.

  5. That's formed on an up and away slider in the tool and is wasted down to prevent A Surface defects so there is little to plastic weld without obliterating and altering the geometry. I would imaging the thickness is only around 1.2mm where is joins the panel. Try cleaning and a liberal amount of araldite to fill the inside where it meets the back face of the panel and a build up of araldite around the outside to form a good radii on the boss. Looking at the markings the plastic is 8% Glass Filled ABS / Nylon blend so should stick well. :)

  6. This is an excellent product for the kind of repair you need to make. I have used it for fairing repair reinforcement and other jobs. Sticks like shit to a blanket, very easy to use as it has the same consistency as putty and goes hard after 20 mins or so .

Another plus point is that you can tear off a small piece, leaving the remainder to remain fresh and ready for use when you need it. Think I paid in the region of £8 via ebay.

  7. As usual @Exige is spot on, there is very little area where the mount mates to the fairing.

I'll try @CRYSTALJOHN suggestion, either way, whatever I use, I reckoned the only way to get it to hold would be to build up a "weld bead" on either side of the mount to the fairing to provide some area to strengthen the bond and give it at least a chance.

    Thanks again

  8. Never tried that JB Weld so thanks for the link. If it's the right type of plastic I would normally plastic weld something like that but it would look totally different than standard by the time I'd finished with it. Don't forget to copper slip all of those little bastards to prevent this happening again
