Having just come off the back of some MAJOR repairs and servicing to my 999, I've finally got the bike running and looking the way I want it (almost). With the SH1TE climate in Northern Ireland and the fact that I only really get out on it during the summer, I'm wondering is the 999 really the tool for these parts? I absolutely love the thing when out on it although given the wonga I've ploughed into it over the past year and the fact that I don't get to ride as often as I want.... I'm considering the unthinkable... I don't think I can face the main bearing going again, the clutch laying down and the electrics having the stability of my granny on ice. Anyway, anyone out there with high mileage-ish bikes? Mine has done just north of 17,500. Given the lack of year-round usage and the mileage, is keeping this on a recipe for disaster? I don't mind standard maintenance and belt changes, actually enjoy it.
If that's a for sale ad then change the wording My mate is just doing the same who lives in Dublin - getting shot of his 1098S that he adores (I'm buying it hopefully )
I made an early decision to ride my 999S rather than pamper it. 44000 miles on it now. If it gets rained on, it gets wet. I get to ride it. It's a good deal. I understand other people wanting to keep theirs nice and sparkly but that wasn't for me.
Fair play Loz but circumstances dictate I can't ride as much as I'd like to (need car for work etc) any major issues with yours?
17k high miles? WTF! That's only just run in. What is it with the motorcycle mileage thing. Every marque seems to be written off as high mileage at anything over 10k. Mine has done 28k and is still going strong, I have had a lot of maintenance to do but that is because the PO was a lazy twat not because it just started turning to dust before ny eyes. There is no reason why a motorcycle used on the road cannot go on indefinitely if regularly maintained.
32k miles no probs. Oil + filters every year. Belts every 3. Mainly used for touring some 2up but gets beans regularly. Washed occasionally.
Believe me, I haven't been able to ride my bike as much as I wanted. Plus, it spent four of its twelve years SORN'd. Major issue occurred during the warranty period - a replacement engine after about 2k miles due to an apparently unique case of woodruff key stripping (I was told by the dealer that DUK had never seen that happen on a 998/999 engine). One or two minor issues (gear return spring breakage as the most recent). The bike had a hissy fit when it got caught in a monsoon one time but completely recovered after it dried out. The 999, apart from that early warranty issue, has been the most reliable bike I've ever had - mind you, it was one of only two new bikes I have ever bought.
It wasn´t shown in Denmark and I didn´t know the show. Looked up the phrase bluey mentioned, didn´t help me much, so the joke went over my head, sorry Watched a few clips on youtube, humour crosses just fine Andy
