Mk1 Superlight Detailed restoration the saga Begins :-)

  1. Here we go !

Bought my Mk1 Superlight #110 a couple of weeks ago, its going to get a sympathetic restoration, but not to totally standard as it already has some extra tuning mods from the 1990's.

I will not be festooning the poor old girl with blingy bolts, and any of that tat ! However so nice bits from the 21st century may be appearing (watch the updates)

So far I have been stripping the bike down and buying parts etc that need replacing, thought I'd sort out the engine first , oil leaks , bad paint day etc.

Spent ages stripping the paint off using some old Nitromors I happen to have. Fiddly and messy job, make sure you wear gloves and safety glasses !

Burnished the side cases with a 3m sateen mop and the crankcases with 3m pads and a brass rotary brush

Then applied black etch primer to the side casings and Grey to the Engine cases .

Finished the crankcases with Heat resistant Alluminium paint and then against my better judgement bought some Halfrauds Petrol resistant laquer , followed the instructions and patches of the casing turned yellow  and some didnt bizzare , waited 48 hours then blew over the whole lot again with the ally paint.

  2. Good work! You going to laquer over the top? Did mine with VHT paint, turned out good - tends to stain easy tho? Would a 2pack clear stand the engine temps?

  3. Techcote Satin Black Hight Temp arrived today  painted clutch covers and alternator cover, can developed a fault pissing paint all over my hand , but not thankfully over the cases, luckily I had ordered two so carried on and got a refund on the faulty one which was nice.
Going oop North with work for a couple of days , so project will cease !, also got a bit of decorating at home to do so me thinks not much can be done this weekend.

  4. Some goodies arrived today.
    Renthal sprockets and chain
A box from Ducati Winchester , new clutch plates , new rear cambelt covers , new belts , oil filter , fuel filter , top end gaskets , a cuddly toy and a toaster etc.
    Renthal Handlebar Grips
    The V5 in my name

  5. Ordered the stainless cap screws tonight from Westfield Fasteners, I will up date my bolt list asap, as I have added some more .

  6. I recently did some restoration work on a mates CB500 and can vouch for the Techcote Satin. Goes on better than any other rattle can paint ive ever had my mitts on and is so easy to get a 100% spot-on finish. It can be a wee bit soft until cured so be careful.

Keep the pictures coming as its looking good.

  7. Pic will keep coming ! I'm going to leave the cases for a couple of days then apply some gentle hot air to finish the curing.

  8. What gearing did you go with?

  9. Std

  10. You may find that a bit high, depending on the state of tune of the bike? Im thinking your motor should push it along tho.

    Mines running 15/41.

  11. I started with 15-41 and was back to std gearing once I had hi comps gas flowed twin plug heads and fcrs it handled it no prob

  12. Tank finished today, new fuel filter and outside sealing ring, tank filler cap and surround painted and laquered, tank polished and put in big box with plenty of Bubble wrap around it, another bit bites the dust !
I must be honest replacing the filter was easy and putting the cap back on was easy as well using a spot of rubber grease, the outside black sealing ring was put on after inserting the main filler housing before inserting the small grub screws altogether a little fiddly but not the drama some have made it out to be, maybe i'm lucky having small hands ?
