Monster 620 / Check Tightening Torque At Critical Points Affecting Vehicle Dynamic Safety

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Datboi, Mar 14, 2021.

  1. hello, i'm doing the 30K km maintenance on my monster.

this is the first time i do such complex maintenance task, most i've done is change tires, oil breaks etc.

so far i did timing belt

    oil

    oil filter

    air filter

    bleed breaks and clutch

and the things i have left are the front forks and "Check tightening torque at critical points affecting vehicle dynamic safety" and valves

this is one i wanna make ABSOLUTELY sure i get right since it's very important.

i checked every screw in sight ( i have a torque wrench but i didn't bother since i couldn't get to 70% of screws)

the only bolts i didn't check are the head bolts, because i need a special key for it, but that shouldn't really be a safety issue, most it'll do is lose some compression.

my question is: what are the most important things i need to check torque on? (when it comes to safety) (front and back tire, suspensions etc)

please only answer this question if you're absolutely sure you're giving me the right answer since if something goes wrong here it could compromise the safety of my bike. thank you!

also feel free to give me any other advice about things to check to improve safety! i'm doing all by myself and it's the first time so i wanna make absolutely sure i don't miss anything

  2. Checking the tightening torque is NOT the same as checking that everything is tight.

  3. once you have twisted enough bolts and screws you don't need a torque wrench... the worse that can happen is a broken or stripped bolt.... i use a torque wrench for important like the wheels and suspensions... but i really don't see the point on using a torque wrench on something like say, handlebars, or valve covers, or little screws here and there, you get the point

  4. The simplest solution is to use a workshop manual and where there is any doubt as to any one individual fasteners' importance in terms of it being safety critical or not, the manual will not only specifiy a tolerance (ie +/- 5%) but also the correct torque value. Well worth getting hold of a copy. It also contains a lot of useful information on regular maintenance tasks/checks as well as in depth explanatons of major components overhaul/removal/replacement.
