I changed the regulator for a Mosfet one on my 1198 and have read the benefit of these ones is they cut out when they get hot, rather than burning out. A few times recently while riding i have checked the volts on the dash and they have shown 11.8 ish, other times 13.8 and 14.2. Could it be the times i have checked it while it is low were coincidentally times when the r/r was on a cool down period, so in effect not working?
Maybe, but I'd be a bit concerned about the 11.8 figure. The battery voltage should never be that low with a working system.
That's what i'm wondering, does it turn off when hot so is not actually at that time a working system?
It is over-temperature protected so presumably it shuts off if it gets too hot but I wouldn't have thought that it would shut off long enough for the voltage to drop down to 11.8V
