Mts1100s: Wear On Edge Of Timing Gear

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by count0zero, Jul 24, 2015.

  1. I've recently purchased a Multistrada 1100S that has been sat around for a while and only has 6000 miles on the clock. Before I start riding I want to change the belts and have the ExactFit ones on order.

Yesterday I took off the timing cover for the H cylinder and was a little bit worried about some wear on the edge of the horizontal timing gear itself, not the belt. See pic below, am I okay to go ahead with just a belt change? Just need a second opinion:

  2. sure it would be fine. dress it up with a bit of emery or summit.

  3. Agree it would clean up OK but I'd be concerned as to why it happened and more importantly that it can't do it again.

  4. Thanks, had some people on another forum mentioning crashed bike or the fuel tank had to come off and things like that, but I can't believe that with the condition the rest of it is in. Took it straight to it's MOT, rode fine, sounds great and passed with no advisories.

  5. i have one. great going bike.

  6. Something has come into contact withe pulley to cause the burring on the edge but the cause is obviously no longer there. Wonder what it was?

  7. Probably the last mechanic! :D

  8. Were there any marks on the inside of the cover?

  9. No marks anywhere else. It's puzzling. Timing cover is in pretty good condition.
