998 Mufflers For Sound

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by flatairbag, Sep 14, 2015.

  1. I figure whats the point in spending good money on a Ducati 998 if she sounds like a moped... and the stock cans do not impress.

Only road riding, but want a better tone, so apologies for "Yet another exhaust" thread but keen on opinions for half system / cans (and supplier) that will improve the tone.

Am I right in thinking that moving to 50mm termis or other free-flowing cans will need a ECU change?
    Thanks for any recommendations.

  2. Yes. Termi's are the obv choice although if well used they made need repacking, check for burnt carbon as a clue.

Otherwise maybe Akrapovic, but tbh I would steer clear of 'modern' designs and get something that looks good on that bike

  3. If anyone has any for sale let me know.
Looks to be more difficult than expected in finding decent cans for the 998.
I contacted Manchester Ducati who mentioned a swap over would require re-mapping. They need to send ECU's away to Germany of all places. Takes a few weeks???

  4. What do you need: 45mm or 50mm. Std 998 is 45mm. You like carbon or titanium. There are a few for sale here in the Netherlands, I can have a look for you. I'd bet they are cheaper than in the UK. Estimated price here is around 350-400. Euro. So that's about 250-300 sterling. That's for the mufflers only.

  5. Nick, I appreciate your time.
Im easy on carbon or titanium..
After all, its a shame to wrap up all that noise when I can also let every driver that passes... and the neighbors enjoy the 998 as much as I do!

I have found a dealer here now in the UK who will do new 45mm carbon termi's (mufflers only with an ECU) for £850.

Am I right in thinking that another option was a half system which had a 45mm to 50mm mid pipe with 50mm mufflers? I assume this is a step up again in noise and system free-flow? (needing very different ECU settings again?)

Would importing from Netherlands sting me on Duty or VAT to the UK?

  6. No import duty or vat on second hand goods from the EU - just postage. Try www.postagesupermarket.com for reasonable quotes.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  7. Posting the ecu to Germany?! What's all that about then?

Try Louigi Moto in Bristol. He sells spares and will know the answers.

  8. Well I would buy them without any ecu, and remap it on the Dyno. Even with a ecu that comes with the exhaust it's still not running optimal and it needs a remap. So wasted money to buy one. I can still have a look for you. For the 998 45mm is a good one. Off course you can do the route of 45-50mm but performance wise it's a lot of £ for the hp you're getting. I took the 45-50mm system because I could get rid of the ugly tubes.

  9. So without sounding like a plonk here.. Has anyone just taken the end off their standard cans.. Ripped out some of the guts (to get more tone) and re-dynod/set ECU up with any results... Or am I an outcast even mentioning that?

New 45mm termis (just slipons) about £900 with eCU.
Local shop approx £400 to remap eCU.
Few 45mm slipped on eBay between approx £300 - 600.
I'd love to get one of those 45mm - 50mm mid pipes but seem rare. Then fit 50 cans on.

  10. I have 45mm Titanium Termi's on my 998 and as I bought them new they came with a suitable ECU, which although not perfect does unleash a bit more power and you don't have the problem of running a weak mixture.

  11. I picked up a set of Promotive 45mm cans which I was in the process of cleaning up before someone pointed out I already had a 45mm-50mm set up :Banghead:. You can have them for what they own me, £110 + p&P. No dents, but still need some time with a mop/elbow grease, but that's what winters are for :). I can send some more close up pics or you can come and have a look if you like, i'm in the HP4 postcode.

I picked up a 50mm carbon set of Termi's off eBay about 6 weeks ago for a reasonable price. Look out for the auctions, sometimes others miss things. With Winter coming more seems to come available as people clean up the garage but the prices also seem to rise as people want to start fiddling.

  12. Those pesky 45mm link pipes have baffles in them.My bike has 45mm Arrow cans(not for road use ssshhh)but still aint fruity enough.:(

  13. I had Spark carbon cans on my 916s. They looked good, sounded great (not an absurdly loud system). Considerably cheaper than Termis. I don't think any ECU change was required. Just a straight swap for the originals. You could do worse than look into it.
Not suggesting this link is the best price - I think they come from Italy.

  14. Keith, too true! From investigations, on the standard 998 .....changing out the collector pipe would be a difficult waiting exercise with higher expense ... and with little gain (except for perhaps slightly more noise and better looks).
It seems on the "S versions" the benefits are greater!

I think Im going to settle for 45mm titanium slipons for my standard 998. Seen some titanium termis I can get second hand for 290. They look in good nick.

@Cream_Revenge. Many thanks for your offer mate, however, after many hours of study.. I think im set on Termis or Akrapovic's for the bike.

  15. I ran cored/de-baffled standard 45mm cans on a 748 and they sounded just like Termis. No idea if they improved or reduced performance though

  16. Just an update...
Got hold of a set of near new Titanium Termi slip-on cans in 45mm.
Fitted them this avo to check out the sound. Wow..No longer does she sound like a "Moped" ... its more of a "Barry White V8" now!

Question: The bike seems to run ok no change to the ECU. Ive not thrashed it yet but idle and low-mid revs on a small run seem ok. How long do you think I could run this setup before needing to dyno/remap the ECU? Are we talking 100 miles could do possible damage, 500miles.. 5000 miles?

Also, has anyone used exhaust gasket material to seal the slip-on joints? I note the joint is not as great as standard cans and a small amount of air is escaping on one of the joints (right side can). The termi cans seem a bit longer and touch the passenger footpegs.

  17. That's gutting, I have a set of these pipes and can honestly say they are the best pipes I've heard on a Ducati, better than my 996,999 and 1098.
When I sold my 748 I couldn't bare to part with them so stripped them off the bike, £110 bargain of the century!!

  18. Gutted sums it up quite nicely. Especially after the hours of polishing i'd put it!!!!
    Maybe when I get a yellow 748 i'll put the on :)

  19. Nooooo, not yellow :Wtf:

You will have Duc Bird after you !

  20. Took her for a quick spin yesterday... umm the termis seem to be causing more vibrations. I have bar weights and the hands went numb.
Could have been the traffic as was kicking about the 3-4K range a bit too much but have not noticed it this bad in the past.

Anyone else noticed increased vibrations after adding slipons? Perhaps the ECU remap may sort it?
