[multistrada 1200 Enduro] Battery Charger

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by tiagogil, Jan 22, 2021.

  1. Hi everyone,

Sorry if I am repeating this topic (I searched for it in the Forum but I've not found anything specific for what I need :p).

I want to buy a battery charger/maintainer for my Multistrada 1200 Enduro. I would like to use the diagnostic port (under the seat) to charge my battery.
I found that there are some options from Optimate but I cannot decide which one is the one that I need.
The Optimate 4 can charge "normaly" or via "CAN-BUS". As I want to use the diagnostic port, which Optimate charger should I pick?

    Thank you in advance,
    Tiago Gil

  2. Why do you want to use the port under the seat? That means you need to remove your seat to charge?

I have a Noco Genius 5 which is blooming great, and have a permanently connected flylead to the battery that's routed to the passenger footrest hanger, where it's secured. Does the job perfectly and can be connected without any fuss, keeping the battery topped up and conditioned. Works on 6v or 12v and on a variety of battery types. Great bit of kit.

You perhaps have a very specific requirement, in which case my solution won't help one bit. :)

  3. Optimate 3 on mine, direct to battery. Also interested in why you want to go via the diagnostic port?

  4. The Optimate option is a lead that plugs into the port under the seat and stays there. Like yours the tail end of the lead can go where ever you want it to plug into the lead from the charger.

In response to the OP. I use an Optimate 4, or rather used to, plugged in via the Ducati specific lead. Having moved last year to a place with a garage, albeit one without power, I now use a 20w Optimate Solar Charger plugged into the same lead. Both set-ups do as they claim and keep my battery topped up despite tracker and alarm. I have the Optimate 4.5m extension lead between the solar panel and the lead on the bike.

The lead could be a touch longer is really mu only criticism.

  5. Thank you!
In which mode you were using the Optimate 4 charger? Normal or CANBUS mode?
    Thanks!

  6. IIRC in normal mode. As stated, due to no mains in my garage, I'm no longer using the Optimate 4. The solar charger doesn't have any fancy options, just a self regulating controller. This works well but took a couple of weeks to bring a battery, that had my tracker pinging me messages that the battery was getting depleted, back to full charge. Bike had sat for a couple of months without a charger as I had other things going on that prevented me sorting out the solar option.

  7. Thank you.

So, probably I do not need a Optimate 4 as I am not going to use de CANBUS mode.
The Optimate 2 will probably solve my "problem" right?

In resume, if I use an Optimate 2, with the Ducati Adapter, connected to the underseat Diagnostic port, it should be fine?

    Thanks again!

  8. I reckon that the Optimate 2 would do a decent job. Though reading their blurb I think the Optimate 4 might do a better job of recovering a battery in poor condition. Not sure about the Canbus option, Optimate call it the BMW CAN-BUS program so might only be applicable to BMWs anyway?

Pretty sure that the Ducati adapter is just a route into a continently permanently live connection to the battery. Neater than multiple connections onto the battery terminals.

  9. I just bought the Optimate 4 Dual Program and the Optimate Ducati Adapter (Ducati Diagnostic to SAE adapter) at it works perfectly with the Multistrada 1200 Enduro.
I connected the adapter to the Diagnostic port and let the SAE connection under the rear seat. After that, it is only necessary to connect the Optimate 4 into the SAE port left on the rear seat :)
    Thank you all!

  10. Chaps, new to me 1200DVT, it has the optimate lead connected to the diagnostic port, but when I connect my optimate it appears to charge when the ignition is on (and for a short time when it is turned off) but not when the ignition is off, any ideas?
    Thanks

  11. Hi Solstice, hmm, thanks strange.
I have the same setup (MTS1200 DVT Enduro + Optimate adapter DUCATI <-> SAE + Optimate 4) and it charges the battery even if the bike/ignition is switched off.
Which adapter + charger are you using ?
    Cheers!

  12. Hmm, strange, first two times it stopped shortly after ignition was turned off and now appears to be operating correctly! Most peculiar, just off to watch a documentary on the Bermuda Triangle :)
