I’m buying a Multistrada (my first) and picking it up will be much easier if I go in the van. Anyone know if it’d fit in a VW Transporter or would it be too tall? (Maybe take the screen & mirrors off). Thanks.
Im not 100% sure but i think it might be too tall. We have a VW transporter at work, all be it decked out with carpeted floor and sides, but theres no way Id have fitted the Multi in it. At best case, It 'MIGHT' just about squeeze in, but you'll have no headroom and you'd have to duck down whilst trying to hold the handlebars at the same time and even then i still think without a screen on the mounting points for it would be too tall Honestly, i just wouldnt bet on it.
Screen and mirrors off and it will go in, I have not done it myself but a chap was dropping his off for a service in one.
Thanks gents for the prompt replies - it sounds like I'm going to need help getting it into the van and getting it out again. (I've had a Hypermotard SP in there and that's a snug fit (the mirrors needed rotating)
Goes in. I have a SWB T5 and can easily get it in and out on my own, have done several times. In fact I’m going to that Dublin for it today. The only tricky bit is is getting in the van yourself, but just get the front wheel in the van, off the ladder, grab the front brake and climb in. Probably a tad nerv wrecking the first time, but its easy enough. The mirrors on my base Dvt just scrape as it goes over the end of my ramp, but thats probably the ramp being a tad heavy on the ends and having hooks on. Its a single ramp. I have a heavy mat fastened down that I throw over the bumper and that will lift it a bit, something lighter probably wouldn’t. Even though the mirrors just scrape the van, they haven't marked, nor has the van. I'm just too lazy to take them off. I usually throw a bag of sand behind the bulkhead and run the bike in to that and four straps hold it. Six rings in my van, but its sound with one on each corner.
Perfect - thanks. (I use an over-centre front wheel chock against the bulkhead then strap the bike under the bottom yoke and the foot-pegs at the back).
I have some smaller straps that I put round the bottom yoke and the rear grab rail thingy. Then put the ratchets on them. Mines got a centre stand and I put it on that, that is probably the biggest faff tbh. Great van, great bike
Neither! Roll it into the wheel chock, once it’s gone over centre, the bike will stay there and you can strap it down at your leisure. (To be fair, I haven’t had a bike with a centre stand since a CBR600 25 years ago).
Maybe the one we have has a reduced roof height, but I could of sworn blind I struggled in the past......maybe that was with the S1000xr......Hmmm, too many bikes and a piss poor memory. As you were chaps
Definitely will go in, that's what I used when I picked mine up but you do need to take the mirrors and screen off, I just put it on it's side stand.
I'd recommend not using either stand, especially the sidestand. Just wedge the front wheel into the corner and strap it down. You really don't want any movement flexing that stand. Nasher
Be more concerned with the stand affecting the floor, always use a puck or something to spread weight a lot of weight in a very small area at the end of a stand especially if you pull it down with a strap (stating the obvious I know)
I remember picking up my first bike many years ago. In the back of my uncles Luton, no straps just me in the back holding it and one beep for left and two beeps for right Anyway, I had my multi in one but it was a mirrors and screen off jobbie. Didn’t use the side stand but used a front wheel chock and then 2 straps. Wasn’t budging
Mirrors and screen needed to come off when I hired one Front chock / DP rear stand with ratchet straps and rock solid
Don't forget the RH mirror mounting bolt is opposite thread, also best to lower the screen mounting bracket to its lowest point especially if you have the Navihalter sat nav mount fitted.
If its a standard size VW (IE not high Roof) then as SimmyTT suggests. I also removed the screen and mirrors when putting my old 12TS into a MB Vito Compact.
