996 My 996 (cut Fairing, Fit Bellypan, Finished)

  1. Spent the last couple of days fitting a Sebimoto carbon bellypan to original ducati fairings as the finishing touch to my 996, sounds easy. That first cut left me thinking what the fek i had done but once you had started there was no going back. The good old dremel came in handy although i sanded most away, rather than cut. The cardboard template trick did not work too well, so just a mm at a time which took far to long. I could take a bit more off at the front but stand the risk of screwing it up so it will do me. Overall it looks well although i had to use 21mm dzus clips in the lower mid holes as i had to use a few spacers between the lower panels and bellypan, so the outsides looked flush. 17mm dzus clips were used for the others. I think i can finally say i am happy to call it finished, for now. Its not to everyones taste but hey ho. Rarely ridden in the last year, more like a big model as i use my YZF.

  2. Looks great well done , I was gonna do mine but i came across a set of 998s bottoms in need of some repair . I repaired and fitted them , they look good but I'm not 100% happy with them so I'm thinking of cutting the originals now , I'll just take my time and take the lines from the 998s panels

  3. Wow, your 996 looks as good as they can get..

    Lovely job..

  4. I wish i had that option :(. A template using the bellypan seemed the easy way but when transferred to the fairings it just looked off. In the end i cut the main excess chunk of the original fairings away, then ensured to get the front and rear parts correct and fitting first and then using a sander bit on the dremel slowly removed a millimeter at a time of the centre section and fine tuned. Just check, check, and check again. Oh yes, and finally, sand the edges and paint em with a little tin of matt black humbrol.

  5. Just noticed the follow through past the carbon air box. Is that follow through carbon too?

    Looks great

  6. Hey darren, thanks for the kind words. I try to keep it as good order as can be and do all the major servicing myself but as of a 23000 mile bike it does have the odd stress crack here and there (about 3) and a small amount of salt corrosion from prior to my ownership but im probably doing it disservice.

Not sure what you mean by the follow through but the airtubes, airbox and sides are all carbon and then they blend very neatly into the carbon seat unit.

  7. Wow that's quite a spec..

Yes I meant the carbon following through onto the rear seat unit.

Shame about the headlight bucket.. Did you sell that off ?

Could add more carbon and resin in the right places..

  8. I was looking at getting a carbon headlight bucket , what's the story is there to much movement/vibration

  9. Looks good!
Just wondering if you may need a Dzus fastener at the front of the side panel wher it meets the belly pan.
I have a set of track fairings with a seperate belly pan and it has a fastener at the very front edge to stop the wind getting behind it and ripping the panel off.

  10. Possibly although this is the 998 street bellypan so fits as on the 998FE. It fits really tight into the fairing at the lower front. No movement at all. I may put a dzus at the lower edge of the v-piece for peace of mind although i have the mesh type version so little meat on it to drill.

Yes, i still have the carbon headlight bucket and horns. Its a non MS version i bought from germany for £250. I fitted it but thought the fairing seemed to vibrate too much plus it has none of the hardware within the bucket itself to hold the light/insrument connectors neatly like the original has, the MS version is the same - no hardware. The carbon horns also do not have the clip for the pegs like the original so the mirror pegs just slot through a hole either side of the mounting screw/bolt. Save your money.

  11. Mmmmm, spose it looks okay for an old shed.;)
