I am not to familiar with coils, however I started my bike over haul and annual service today and whilst replacing my clutch master/slave and hose, I noticed that my horizontal coil seems to have a rusty growth. Any idea what's going on here? I have had a on and off mis-fire for the last month or so that I am planning on diagnosing and repairing during the servicing is this potentially the culprit?
The coil has a laminated soft iron core which is what you are seeing. It's gotten seriously rusted and the rust has pushed the laminations apart and yes, the coil would be best replaced.
