  2. Great advert, they always seem to do reasonably graphic road safety adverts in NI.

  3. Most of our helmet \bike cams are full of this footage (albeit near misses).
We could have saved them a fortune. Are they trying to scare us off bikes?

  4. I intend to email this to all staff at work now that more bikes will be on the roads over the next few weeks. Interesting claim that driver carelessness is the biggest cause of motorcyclists deaths and serious injuries. Not speed, not anti-social riding.

  5. Very good.

The lesson for us though is that despite the acidents being triggered by the actions of the car drivers the motorcyclists could have observed the developing hazard and reacted to reduce the risk.

  6. I think they are trying to educate non biking car drivers!!!

  7. It's terribly simple to stay safe on a motorbike.

On the approach to any hazard - junction, blind bend, oncoming traffic, pedestrians on the adjacent pavement, parked car, any stretch of road that might have diesel on it, any stretch of road that may have a loose or broken surface - slow down to approximately 10mph or less.

That way nothing bad can ever happen to you and you will live forever!

  8. I think 10mph might be a little too fast for some on here...

  9. Nope, you'll probably live to just under 80, but it will seem like forever.

  10. We heard you the first time!

  11. Speed is not the issue, it is inappropriate speed that is the problem.

In each of the incidents on the advert the driver was 100% at fault, but the rider could have made a difference. The question is whether you are happy to place your destiny entirely in the hands of others or whether you are going to be "proactive".

We are also led to believe that in the majority of biking accidents there is no other vehicle involved.

  12. Not really anything to add other than stay safe peeps, I don't hold the driver responsible as such in my accident, he was young and inexperienced, and young inexperienced drivers make mistakes, it's just a fact of life and a risk we all gave to accept when we go out onto the road. Anything at all you can do to prevent yourself from going through what I have must be worthwhile, even if it's just a bit of high vis or defensive riding.

I for one will be taking further training this year.

  13. The advert implies that car drivers are responsible for most motorcycle accidents, and that's not the case, motorcyclists are more than willing to lob themselves at the scenery without third party intervention.

The onus, as ever, is on you to look after yourself. Don't believe for one minute that any car driver has even noticed these adverts.

  14. Yes but then your advert would consist of developing hazard, motorcyclist reacting, applying brakes, coming to a steady and safe stop.. Probably followed by a few choice words. None of this motorcyclist going head long through the internals of a dozy drivers car via the windscreen!
    Drives the point home somewhat.

  15. It does drive the point home to car drivers, who are presumably the primary target audience of the advert, to be more bike aware.

The danger is that it reinforces the idea amongst some bike riders that it is car drivers that cause accidents, which is only part of the story.

  16. I see what you are saying here, John and I do have a degree of sympathy with you.

However, when putting across public safety issues, the general populace tends to struggle with more than one message being delivered at any one time.
Alas, a significant proportion of the populace struggle with one message at a time.

  17. I agree Loz, the advert, aimed at car drivers, is a good one.

Now let's educate the bike riders.

  18. Let's get down to basics, cyclists and their poor attitude is quite annoying. I was behind a car a couple of days ago which started slowing for the group of cyclists ahead, the cyclists were in a single line, next thing, 2 wide out to the white line. Why? To protect themselves from the traffic? Bullshit. I'm so fucking tired of driving and the next thing I see is this crap. Aggressive is an understatement for cyclists. Cheeky bastards. I see better car drivers than anyone else. Pedestrians are fucking idiots, cyclists are pretending to be pumped up on something, fucking HGV,'s don't know you're there, buses don't give a rats ass, but the normal bod in the car does try.
Asshole cyclist this morning broke a red, I was riding through a green, he braked when he seen me. Prick nearly went over the bars.

  19. I agree that cars are the least aggressive road users. One thing that really grinds my gears, though, is the amount of ignorant motorcyclists I see these days, and it seems to be a growing phenomena. They sit there in lane 3, oblivious to the world around them, seemingly incapable of operating a rear view mirror, and probably bluetooth'd up to the hilt listening to 40 year old AOR bilge. They fall into two distinct camps: BMW GS owners and Triumph Bonneville owners.

I can only put this phenomena down to direct access training, and the growing age of new riders.
