Evening all I’ve been collecting parts up over the last year or so to make a complete set. Got the brake and gear change levers new last year, frame / jack up plates a few months ago and the hangers just the other day. The hangers were a bit battered but straight and as with a lot of NCR stuff, the anodising has lifted in places. Spent most of the afternoon rubbing them back down to the alloy ready for reanodising and there’s the problem... the local anodisers have stopped doing small, one off jobs cause they are too busy so I’m looking for recommendations there. The second problem I have is that the L/H footrest has seen the road and is badly worn. It could be tig’d back up with alloy then machined back down or, I could get some new ones made up. Again, could anyone recommend a decent machine shop? Once all is sorted, @Andy800 has kindly offered to laser etch the lettering back in. Just like these...(hopefully) Thanks, ian
Are really effective method I've used before to remove old (or gold) anodize is a warm caustic soda solution. Works a treat!
Got the ground off part of the footpeg tig welded back up and started to re form it. Going to be a long process minting these rearsets back to new condition.
Well, first off, big thanks to the Andys... Andy @final_edition for turning down and reforming the footrest and Andy @Andy800 for all the moral support! Half way there, nearly. The frame jack up plates and gear shift rod came back mint but the rest was shit, proper shit! Near to talk to them again tomorrow to find out what went wrong and how to prep them for best for reanodising.
Spoke to them today and what they said made sense... To get the rearsets stripped of all anodising, machine polished then re anodised. So this is what i’ll Get done. They’ll strip and re anodised them for nowt but i’ll Have to polish them myself or pay for someone to do it.
Looking at the pictures again, I wouldn’t be surprised if the shite finish was caused by some iron/steel particales hidden within, reacting while dipped!
Anodising stripped and machine polished... Took them back for re anodising and miles better. Still a bit darker shade of titanium silver but nice and uniform. Got the footpegs reassembled and fitted the roll pins so they are fixed. Haven’t got round to finding the torsion springs yet so just made a couple out of alloy Tig filler wire. These are obviously no good but look the part til I can get some proper springs. The pegs are fixed so doesn’t really matter, just looks right. Laser etching hopefully next week.
Big shout out to @Andy800 and his Mrs. Look what a fantastic job they’ve done with the laser etching. Top people!
as ever, an immaculate job. btw, Ian, not ignoring you just that my phone has died :-( message me with your number and I will call you from my other mobile. Pete
