This is a long shot but it would save me a lot of trouble. Does anyone have a 748/9** Lefthand (nearside) Corse style heelguard that they can let me have or sell for a decent price. I have the righthand one and I want to mould up a few sets and try and reproduce them in Carbonfibre. I already have the mould for the right one and I am testing out over the weekend to see how it comes out. If they come out decently enough then I am happy to produce a few sets for forum members for less than anyone else could\would charge commercially at the moment. An option would be if someone could lend me one but there is a danger that the moulding materials used would affect the surface finish so I don't really want to go down that route. If anyone can help I would be grateful. Here's a photo of a set and it's the smaller one of the two that I need. If you have anything to offer please PM me.
Andy, I'll PM you later (when I get home!) and give you the address. Thanks for your help. ^^ If the moulds work out OK then I can produce a few pairs. Initially I'll produce a few fibreglass ones and then go on to Carbonfibre. I have purchased some lightweight close weave twill fibreglass that is as light as carbonfibre but doesn't have the obvious look but is almost just as strong. It's an experiment, but looks promising so far. I'll post later when I have done a mould. Thanks once again.
Do the corse guards fit behind the rearsets on the same mounting points? If so I'm definitely up for a set and will happy pay for one of the first sets to try out for you. Cheers Haydn
Andy very kindly sent me one to mould from, so now I have a full set. I have cast the right hand one in fibreglass and it's pretty good and not much heavier than a carbonfibre one. I have obtained some very light close weave fibreglass and this seems to be almost as good as using carbonfibre or kevlar. Haydn you can have a fibreglass set to try out if you want. If they work I am happy to sell a few sets of fibreglass ones which will be in primer. If you are using them for a track bike they will do the job perfectly and be about not much more than a quarter of the cost of a carbonfibre pair. I am working towards producing them in carbonfibre but they will need to be lacquered and so will be a lot more work to produce. I reckon I can still get quite well below the price of the cheapest set of Corse Carbonfibre ones currently on sale. I am also going to look at making the 998\SPS style heat guard which works well with this setup
Nelson, OK i'll add you to the list and I will update you on progress as I still have to mould the lefthand side first.
Red, its for a road bike so would definitely be up for a carbon pair as they would go well with my heat shield and swing arm cover. Do you think you could get the lacquered finish as good as the say carbon king or conquest carbon?. The cheapest set of course ones I've seen are on ebay at £59.99. Cheers Haydn
Fundamentally at the moment yes, I reckon It would need about 10 coats of lacquer to do the job really well. It might sound a lot but I would need to do some rubbing down to get that deep gloss finish. I know I can better stock carbonfibre piece because I have lacquered ordinary carbonfibre before and it looks very good when given just those few extra coats. So far the glassfibre ones need a little rubbing and a tiny bit of stopping for the odd pinhole but they actually look pretty good. As a guide I reckon, depending on material costs, I can do them for £30 for carbonfibre and £17.50 for glassfibre. That's as it stands at the moment, if materials go up then I will have to alter prices. I will only sell something that I am satisfied is of totally decent quality and I am only doing this as an experiment to see how it goes and to get some extra carbon bits ultimately onto my sons 748 Trackbike without say paying £60 to £100 for a pair of heelguards. The carbon finish by the way would be 2x2 twill, so you might want to check that matches what you currently have. Attached is an image of the 2x2 twill if that helps.
Looks good to me too, put me down for a set of these in carbon. quick question, always wondered how the carbon doesn't get crushed behind the rearsets when the bolts are tightened? Cheers Haydn
The heel area usually uses a black filler to flatten the area and keep it's shape. The gelcoat and epoxy are very strong when moulding carbofibre compared to the polyester resin used for fibreglass. Normally they don't mix either but I have found a brand that does. I have just completed a headlamp filler in the epoxy and it's amazingly tough.
Hi red, any updates on these? I've been offered a set of carbon guards so just thought I'd check progress. Cheers Haydn
I have just finished a test carbonfibre one today and the weave is spot on but I need to check the gloss more closely, it's a little opaque so I need to use a different "gelcoating". I notice at the moment there are a lot of cheap heelguards made of carbonfibre on ebBay and I would suggest if you get them for the money they are currently going for I would buy them, one set is only £9.99. If you want a glassfibre pair then I have a few perfect ones of to sell.
