Need Some Creative Ideas For Tank Paint Job

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by tboooe, Jan 19, 2020.

  1. I literally do not have any creative skills so I am looking to this forum for some help with a small paint project. I picked up an aluminum gas tank from a 1198SP for my 840 EVO. Initially, I was planning on just painting it like the OEM tank, completely in Arctic White Silk color. Then I thought it would be cool to somehow do something different with the paint job in order to show off the fact that the tank is aluminum. That being said, I am very conservative and want the paint job to look OEM from a distance but to also have kind of subtle & simple design that you can only notice when you walk up to the bike.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  2. Here is one idea I had...paint this Ducati emblem onto the tank, showing the bare aluminum of the tank.

  3. that looks cool

  4. I’d definitely stick to something Original that’s not going to look out of place. But showcase the Alloy 100%.... I really like the mostly alloy look as per last pictures....

  5. I did this when i bought an alloy tank for the 1098R and had the same thought as you, in that I wanted to show some alloy but didn't just want a facsimile of a current design.

The tank is a lot more angular than the Panigale one for whatever design you choose. Practice with some fine line masking tape to see what you like.

  6. Thanks @Dave dunlop and @Robarano I really appreciate the suggestions. As much I really like the look of tanks you suggested I want to try and remain "true" to the fact that I have an 848 EVO, not an 1198 or some other model. I want to show off more of the aluminum though. Perhaps I can just keep certain small sections of the tank aluminum like the knee area (essentially opposite to what @Robarano did). Or maybe keep the top portion of the tank aluminum and add some paint down the center?

  7. My advice would be to keep it very simple. Less is more usually.

  9. I apologize. It wasnt my intent to criticize your design. I just think your tank looks incredible and consistent with the overall paint scheme of your bike. I have an 848 which is all one color so I want to remain mostly consistent with that models design language.

  10. 100% agree with you. Ideally I can come up with a design that looks like an OEM 849 EVO to the untrained eye but up close has some element that shows off the aluminum.

  11. Have you thought at looking at the early ducatis and some of their designs for idea's?

  13. What if I combine the 1198SP and the Panigale R tank paint schemes. I would keep the basic design from the 1198SP but instead of having the bare aluminum strip go all the way down the back of the tank, have it encircle the gas cap and end there?

  15. Also, what if I make the DUCATI wording on the tank also bare aluminum? I think that would be really trick! Could be hard to see on a white tank though.
