Netflix

  1. I signed up to Netflix a while ago - given that I had the month trial and I could see plenty of stuff of interest. I signed up for the basic package of two devices (my PC and Telly) as that is all that I needed. Ever since, it seems that there is open season on my account. I get numerous emails telling me that my account has been signed on to all across the World - from Indonesia to South Africa. Given that my password seems to be open knowledge on NetFlix and every time I change it, then I have to do the same for other accounts that share the same password, then this is turning into a right PIA.

This crap about having different passwords for each account would mean that I have to keep track of about 40 passwords!

I suspect, as this only started with NetFlix, that they are not very secure. I may bin it soon as this is a right pain! Anyone else has this experience with NetrFlix?

  2. I have Netflix. No problems with password or account being hijacked.

There again, I use a different password for every service I have signed up to, and use a password manager to keep track. I recommend this approach.

  3. I have had Netflix for a long time and never any issues as you have described. It would not be the monstrosity distributor it is if it had those issues - have you tried contacting them.

  4. We had an account hacked on Netflix, contacted them and hasn’t happened again.
Not sure what the difference is between just changing your password and contacting netflix but it seems to have worked. perhaps try that route ?

Another recommendation here for using different passwords and a password manager.

  5. I had a web chat with Net Flix. Their answer was to sign me out everywhere - including this PC that I told them not to.

It seems that it is easier to sign in to my account from Indonesia than it is for me in the UK. You would think that they make it impossible to sign in from a different country than your registered country unless you asked them specifically. My impression is that they are not really bothered.

I got the impression that this is not really ground-breaking news. Your account has been hacked so shut up complaining and change the password until it is hacked again.

I would move to Amazon but I don't expect their attitude to be any different.

I may start using a password safe. Which ones are people using?

  6. I use keeper

  7. You can buy Netflix Premium for a year for £7 on eBay, so I guess that what the hacking accounts is about.

I'm curious so I just bought it to find out what you get & how it works. PayPal will refund me if I never hear anything!

Amazon Prime Video isn't great but some of it is good. I've had no problems at all with being hacked.

  8. I've had a quick scan round and don't really trust any of them. The underlying theme seems to be, 'tell us all of your passwords and we';; keep them secret. Honest!' I'll write something myself.

  10. I've just chanded my NetFlix password to only something that is used on NetFlix. If it is hacked again then this will prove that they have s security problem. Gonna do the same with ebay because that was hacked a while ago when somebody managed to hack the delivery address of something that I bought.

  11. I've never had a problem with eBay delivery, but I always use PayPal so it wouldn't matter as you always get a refund if a problem occurs.

  12. I use PayPal as well and they were great about it. They refunded me straight away and just get the money back from eBay. That suited me because I wanted eBay to suffer!

  14. @PerryL when accessing the internet and thus Netflix do you use a VPN by any chance, or TOR? If so, it mayn't be Netflix's fault but the fact your VPN service is rerouting your access point all over the world.

How do you know it's your Netflix account that's been hacked?

If I look at my account I can see various logins from all over Ireland (I don't use a VPN) but it's not been hacked it's just the way the internet, and my ISP, works.

  16. Netflix can detect when people use some VPNs, but not others. Netfix will block your connection if it detects a VPN.

If you plan to use Netflix via a VPN, do some research on what brands can defeat Netflix.

  18. I don't use a VPN or anything. I get these emails from NetFlix that tell me my account has been used in South Africal/Botswana/or Singapore. I'm getting them now when I do it - although they think I am in Bristol, which I'm not. I'm guessing that my ISP gives me a new ip address every so often and this is what triggers it.

Pity that they are not clever enough to work out that I'm in Gloucestershire and if my account is being used in South America, or Singapore in the same day, then it is clearly being hacked. They are not worried about it at all and it is my tough sh1t if my account is being compromised.

The thought that I am the customer and they are the supplier counts for zero. I did suggest that the add the footer to their emails to say, 'so why don't you f*c} off to Amazon but keep paying us!' Nobody saw the funny side and it was emphasised that they really don't care.

  19. If it’s hacked again you likely have a broader problem.
If you use a common password and single email then you’ve likely been run through a script that will try 10,000s of websites to see if they can be accessed using that permeation.
