New 749 owner, some general advice?

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by JuttyM, Sep 4, 2013.

  1. Hi All

My name is Jut and I am from the Midlands. I am ex-Ducatisti (916 section, SP3 rebuild thread) and have stayed off forums since Ducatisti went AWOL.

I have just purchased a base 2007 749 as a regular ride. I don't want to make too many changes but there are some things I'd like to sort. I have some questions and would like some general feedback is poss.

    a) I have a boney backside and want to change the seat. Anybody tried to make the std seat more comfy (gel pad, extra foam, etc) without going the Corbin/Sargent route?
    b) I think my rear shock is a Sachs. Any benefit to buying the Showa version second hand and having it rebuilt. Ohlins etc is not in my plan
    c) The top of the forks is all but level with the top clamp - is this factory, i'd expect to see a few lines at least?

Grateful for anything you can contribute to any of the above.

    Hello and cheers !
    Jut

  2. Ay up, nice looking bike.

To be honest, you get used to the hard seat. Soon you wont even notice it, unless you plan on doing long rides.

In terms of shock and setup, give Revs suspension a call in Halesowen. They were doing free setups the last time I checked.

My forks are showing 4 lines through the top yoke but the rest of the geometry has to be set up. Plenty on the internet.

Mine had been fettled when I got it and it handled horribly to the point where you felt that you would not make a corner if there was any sort of ripple in the tarmac. I had mine set-up by k-tech and transformed how it behaves.

    Give Revs a call!!!

  3. Thanks JC. Revs rebuilt the suspension on my 916, seemed decent enough chaps but i never took it back to be set up properly. I might get them to build a Showa rear shock for the 749 and get the whole bike set up at the same time.

As for the seat, I'll take your word for it ! It seems pretty hard to me, maybe a few hundred miles might answer my question.

  4. There you go, sounds like you know what your doing.

If you ever go on a proper long ride I think the best option is a cushion

  5. Nice bike. I've not found the seat uncomfortable on mine, maybe a bit more padding than you carry, to be honest once the bike warms up you'll be more concerned about your backside bursting into flames from the heat under the seat. Enjoy it and ride it, I don't get out on mine nearly enough.

  6. I rode around german countryside like a headcase for 9 days last year, the seat was fine imo.

Get the suspension setup and maybe bar risers. Apart from that, the bike is rockin..

The quicker you ride them,, the more comfy they get.
