  1. Hi i have just bought a 58 reg 1098 with 6k on it. The bike has not been dealer serviced its life.
So i have booked it into a ducati dealer , for the belts to be changed. I'm happy to do other servicing items as i always serviced my bikes, but i'm not sure if i need the shims checking? do i need the dealer to check these as well?

  2. Do you know who did the service as there are several well respected (and bloody good) indies out there. If you don't have any record then I'd get them checked and adjusted. She'll run so much sweeter when they are in spec.

  3. Unfortunately I don't know it's history, the guy I bought it from home serviced it.. So Im gonna get them checked now for piece of mind. Just wanted a bit of advice, It's my first twin.
    Thanks

  4. Where are you located? Someone may have a recommendation for service.

  5. I think the valves are checked at 7.5 k miles.get the belts changed, ballance the throttle bodies, reset tps, new fluids and filters and good as new.

  6. sounds about right

  7. I'm from cannock in Staffordshire, the closest ducati dealer is in Wolverhampton.
I did wonder about the throttle body business. Looks like my bills getting bigger my the minute...
iv already done all the fluids. And as the bike has no official history, I am happy to service the bike with items I can do.
I enjoy it, cleaning and polishing along the way.

  8. throttle bodies can be set by anyone they don't have to be ducati. the tps needs software but is easy done.belt change is fairly easy. its only an engine not rocket science lol.most of the work bar the belts I would do on a Honda if it was needed so don't think its just your ducati. in fact even with a service history I would do it anyhows .

  9. You can tailor a service to your own requirements these days. If your having the belts done, then best check the valves and tps etc. Then you know that you have peace of mind for 2 years whilst you do the little interim services.

  10. Self servicing your bike is the whole essence of motorcycling , used to be that the average motorcyclist knew far more about his steed than any car driver. A man ( or woman .......yeah Ilike that idea ) who regularly cleans and lubes the bike will very quickly see when anything is out of place . A basic understanding of how your bike works and how to service it will give you further satisfaction ( than just riding it ) and save you heaps of dough , so get into it man . Im not suggesting you have to get tats or name your kids after engine parts but getting into motorbikes a little more than just riding them is not without its merits

  11. Im been thinking alot about what to do regards this serving lark. And I have decided to let the dealer do a full service even though iv done some of it already. It will gives me peice of mind before I start using it. I can then use my time and concentrate on cleaning them exhaust pipes.
