New Project! '64 Mototrans 250 Deluxe

Discussion in 'Vintage' started by Connor, Jan 3, 2020.

  1. My '999 to sport classic' project is never ending, but I'm at a stage where I'm fairly happy with it. Wanted something older for a while and picked this up recently.

Let's see how I get on with it!

Top end is currently off as more of the exhaust was coming out the breather than the pipe! Cracked rings and scored bore unfortunately, also damage to the cam and rockers.

  2. I think a quick wash and you'll be sorted :upyeah:

  3. A word or warning with motortrans. Nothing from italy will fit. I used to keep single spares but i found that it was near impossible to tell if used parts were spanish or italian and they are not interchangeable. Even things like cranks , timing gears and the gearbox are all different :)
I do keep a lot of stuff for the carbs still but even spanish dellorto's are different from Italian...

  4. That's the plan so far, that paint job took 60 years to get there, don't want to ruin it by restoring it! Make it mechanically sweet and enjoy it :)

  5. Already found that out the hard way! I managed to get machine shop to turn down a 250 white camshaft to fit, lift is quite similar so hopefully won't have any clearance issues as I've also gone for a high compression 24 horas piston. Worst comes to worst I can machine the piston too, but... I'm enjoying the failure so far! Aha

  6. What really really impressed me was that I was riding around at 20mph and the piston ring was in a million pieces, it wants to live! Screenshot_20200103-183047.jpg Screenshot_20200103-183036.jpg

  7. New liner too :) IMG_20191222_121758.jpg Screenshot_20200103-183645.jpg

Really could of got away with a little overbore as the cylinder wasn't that damaged, so I gave that wossner over size piston to a local machine shop.... They absolutely f**ked it! So I ended up having to get a new liner, wasn't a good day and they had it for 3 weeks!!!

  8. What do you think of front drum brakes so far?

  9. Absolutely terrible, we have a little cg125 at work with front drum brakes and that has better brakes that the disk model 125's we teach cbts on, makes me think if I can get better shoes it might make it better for mine. But I'm not sure what's out there!

  10. Its quite shock at first when you pull on the brake and nothing much (compared to what you're used to) happens! Though the brake doesn't improve, your engine braking and riding changes to make it somehat better with time...

  11. Have you ever tried the 24 horas setup with the twin leading shoe? Surely that's got to be better, I know it's an old bikes but their must be a way!

Also.. my front rim is a little buckled, how much can you take out by relacing it?

  12. Re drum brakes - there's a lot of info here http://www.engineeringinspiration.co.uk/drumbrakes.html

Relacing rims to remove buckles? Never tried, but the wheel repairs guys should be able to sort it?

  13. Just run an oily rag over it it’ll be perfect.

  14. Few updates;

Barrel and piston back in, Got a bit excited with something to do with all this coronavirus stuff going on and managed to set the cam timing 180' out! Got that sorted out and went to give her a kick and the gear just kept slipping.

Found some lovely mangled and snapped teeth, had a quick look online and couldn't find anything that wasn't in the states. Decided to do the stupid thing and do a bodge repair to make sure those teeth don't snap and end up where they shouldn't be!

Plan so far is to only kick it from about 90 degrees down, missing the repaired teeth. Although thankfully I found this in the case!

This is the first time I've played with a single bevel so I had a look in the manual for where a big circlip should live.

of course that circlip was a nightmare to get out, ended up having to weld a bolt to different sections of it and snapping bits of it gradually!

  15. Turns out the Amal Carb it has also had the jetting from a 24 horas and wouldn't rev with a bit of black smoke, ordered a 190 main jet and lowered the needle a notch and it runs much happier now! Quite looking forward to going for a little run... to find out what else is wrong! but for now it's all back together with some new fork seals and oil aswell.

I'm not very confident in the battery/charging system, seems to run for a while then cut out with a low battery voltage and my charger doesn't like the battery. Apart from a full 12v conversion I'm undecided what to do about it, not sure on parts availability?

It was charging well initially even with a broken wire from the stator. I looked at both phases with a scope and although they look terrible compared to a modern system it seems to be ok. Not sure about the regulator though!

  16. Also found a used exhaust that suits the patina of the bike, mine was knackered and didn't seal in the head, the flange has rusted away. Plus look at the dents! thats at least 1/2 a HP right there!

  17. Found this quite interesting too, 55ish years of cylinder head design!

My little tool boxy bit had a lock on the side which i didn't have the key for, I could hear something rattling inside and it drove me mental thinking about what it could be. I ground of the rivets so I could hopefully reuse the lock and found a used spark plug... not quite the gold bars I was hoping for! Did these come standard with the lock? I've not seen it before? Also, What would that round sticker would have been? So many questions!

...and yes, thats a piece of alloy filler keeping it shut! aha

  19. Hi,

I, have recently bought a 1960 175TS. It,s a Spanish one. I want to take the head off cos I think someone has been tuning it. It might even be bigger than 175. The book says undo the four head bolts and remove. Surely the cam drive ect. has to go too?
    Any advice would be appreciated!
    Cheers.

  20. The head will come off without messing with the cam or anything, the tube with the cam intermediate shaft will come up too. Just make sure it's all lined up when it goes back on :)
