New Shock Or Service Old.

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Skidmark66, Apr 21, 2017.

  1. My rear shock on my track bike needs a service its the standard Ohlins which came on the 748R. Thing is im just toying with the idea of just replacing with a new shiny or good second hand updated one.
Question is would the service on the old one make my existing shock good enough or would I really benefit from a more modern up to date one.
If I do decide to buy new can anyone recommend a good after market shock/model

  2. I would suggest that a rebuild would be more appropriate than a service. Given the cost of that, something like a made to order Nitron comes into play which are popular on here and well thought of by PDQ in Maidenhead who can do either for you. Andy

  3. A rebuild would allow a spring suitable for your weight and the shock can also be valved and setup accordingly. A standard shock is just that, a compromise to encompass most average peoples weight and above and below that level.

No doubt it would be a potentially cheaper option unless you were looking for a custom built shock which is not an Ohlins unit. Makes like Penske, Nitron, Maxton, Wilbers, White Power, Hyperpro and YSS are all possibles.

  4. Agree with the above. Went through all this last year and decided to get the shock rebuilt. New shock body, new spring and service should be less than £280, or there abouts... Got done at Kais near Preston.
