Further to my post .. Managed to get the bike on and then started to lIft IT up then crash ! See attached I think I can get the bottle jack bit welded but don't have much experience with hydralics. how do I re fill the bottle then represurize it? I think it will not explode when I take it apart?
Decent bottle jack will have a fill point, sometimes a screw. Almost looks like yours has a screw in ram cap like a hydraulic ram, if so then at least it can be stripped before welding to avoid knackering the seals inside. If it can't be taken apart then make sure it's fully extended before welding and do a little at a time to avoid it getting too hot. Might be worth looking as to why it broke, is something seized, the pivots look a bit scored, causing the jack to exert pressure where it usually wouldn't. Decent welds shouldn't break just with weight of a bike.
Totally agree with this. The jack system should only experience axial force, so it looks like there's been a failure due to other forces. Quite likely a sized pivot or summat...
Looks unfortunate, who is it manufactured by? Looks like the ram central spindle is held in with a self tapper?
Many thanks for all the replies. I shall answer where I can. There is a threaded access point to the bottle. I assume I open that and drain the hydraulic oil? I then can dismantle and send to the welder? In anycase I have spare seals I think it broke because. I stored it on its side. Centre self-taper which holds large swivel pin in place was loose and Pin slid out enough to free from one side. This twisted the join, breaking it - so spot on Andrew ! There was one Centre self-taper in place at the middle point of the large pin stopping it moving (yellow arrow), but the two small holes accessing the cup holes that the pin goes into were missing both ends (blue Arrows) Thinking about it if there were screws there in place then the pin could not rotate (maybe they are grease points) I think it is made by Harbor Freight but can't verify this. I assume I unthread the large crenelated nut on the bottle jack? All input welcome
That screw should let the oil out, and to re-fill, they aren't usually very large to take ages to fill, big syringe might help, but make sure air can escape, otherwise you will have a face full of oil. The large nut should let you dismantle it. If you were near Lincoln I'll weld it for you.
Cheers Andrew I think i am safe to unscrew the main plunger from the bottle and it can be welded. I also figured out only fixing for the big bar is top yellow arrow screw. BTW I am equidistant between Lincoln and Newark !
