I noticed this a while back but not using it much over winter I was reminded of this issue yesterday when I dug the 1997 900ss out of its mothballs Under reasonable braking the rear brake makes a loud dry screeching sound when coming to a stop, enough so that I’m relying on the front to come up a halt. The disc isn’t scored and there is plenty of life left in the pads, from what I can see. Anyone had a similar experience?
Should be nothing more than your caliper needs a good clean. I’ve started using Bilt Hamer wheel cleaner and a tooth brush. Andy
I think you've included a very relevant word above and it will simply be this, producing that high frequency oscillation that we all hate. For several reasons pads get tempted to "walk around" a bit and designers have added a "dedicated shim" for many decades to overcome this, as you well know. These tend to be less effective and can even get annealed by the heat experienced depending what they are made of. A "skinny" pad not far from needing replacing is more likely to do it than a lovely fat new one for example. Crude solution (again, you well know) is a bit of your favourite "splurge". Above advice has proved controversial in the past, so not gone into more detail.
