1200 Not At Work Today - Multi Wasn't Having Any Of It!

  1. So last night I felt the surging at steady throttle so made a mental not to check the valve. Got up for work as usual this morning, started the bike. It was rough, sounded like it wanted to stall. I revved it and it stalled. Immediately undid the heat shield and checked the exhaust valve, all was fine.

Continuous trying to start it resulted in a couple of near starts and then a low battery warning. Went back into the garage and plugged it into the optimiser and let it bulk charge. Went back out and tried it again and got a puff of smoke and an electrical burning smell from the fuse box.

All fuses checked out fine. Bike still powers up and will attempt to start. Even now the optimiser will say it's charged but the moment I try to start it I get a battery warning. Must be a dead battery but what on earth was that smoke and smell? LH side of dash, right by the fuse box.

  2. On the left hand side there is the bike brain chip and the suspension chip and lots of connectors...maybe worth seeing if it came from those wires connectors or either of the cpus?

  3. also *I think* the alternator (or generator as ducati call it) is on the left too.

  4. Alternator... That sounds about on the money. Glad I have 12 month warranty. Just need to figure out how to get it to P&H as they can't collect until the 28th!

  5. Might be worse. Can start the bike if I give it the beans whilst starting it. Runs rough and the exhaust leaves a greasy/oily deposit on the rear tyre. Saw that and decided to leave it the hell alone until I can figure out how to get it to the dealer.

  6. Have you checked oil and water levels , just with you saying oily deposits out of exhaust

  7. Only had the bike a couple of weeks. (2010 with 6k on the clock) Had a belt service done by the dealer before I picked it up. Coolant was changed to the pink stuff and oil and coolant levels all appear fine. I'm now wondering wether I have the leaky heads and the coolant change was done too late?!?

  8. I've a lovely 2010, fully serviced if you fancy another bike, alternatively it might be that you don't have air conditioning for your man cave!

  9. I have 12 month dealer warranty, and if I want a bit more air I just open the garage door. You want a copier?

  10. AC in man cave...? Now theres a thought

  11. I don't trust optimisers and all them battery conditioner type chargers. they fuck up sensitive electronic equipment namely diode's or any type of chip that has diodes in. I've had 2 alarms fuck up while leaving my bike on an optimate for the winter.

  12. A decent optimiser should mimic you riding the bike.

  13. Got an ancient Optimiser that I've used successfully for numerous bikes over the years. Bikes always start first time every time despite being left for weeks. Only difference is I don't have alarms fitted. Now if anything is going to f**k up electrics, they will!

  14. It's the newness :)

  15. Well the bike has a tracker so need the optimiser. I dropped it off at P&H this morning so hoping they get it sorted pronto. I did think that it may have been my 5v USB converter that went up in smoke. That would explain why no fuses had blown and the bikes electrics seem to work. I had noticed it was only maintaining my iPhone's battery level of late.

Engine still not good though but may be a separate problem

  16. Got a couple of battery disconnect notifications from the bike. Trackers are awesome on keeping tabs on when the bike shop are actually working on your bike. Anyway it's good news and bad. Bad news is it ran on 1 cylinder for about 20 seconds before cutting out. Engine needs stripping. Good news is it's in my warranty with them so everything is covered.

  17. That's a sad start to your Ducati ownership, however at least it's all on Warranty. P&H rebuilt my top end and they did a good job.

  18. Your description reads as if the heads may need replacement (as is pretty common for 2010 bikes including mine). Look on the bright side, a top end refresh and everything will be thoroughly checked over. Make sure that the engine paint hadn't started blistering as they could do those at the same time.

Hope you are back on the road very soon :upyeah:

  19. I think heads too. They only did the coolant change when I bought the bike so all this time it had had the blue stuff. Engine paint was looking good.

  20. Is it only running on the rear cylinder? That would point to the front head having gone, my coolant was changed but I guess the damage had already been done.
