Oh No Another Oil Thread

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Desmoquattro, Nov 29, 2017.

  1. Im using fully synthetic with my Carby and ie Supersports, question is, I recently bought 5w40 halfords bike oil, now Im wondering whether this this grade is too thin for them? I do live in Scotland, so the weathers cold and $hite most of the time. What do folks think?

  2. 5W40 has an operating envelope that starts at a lower temperature than 10W40, and 15W40 but does not go as high as 10W50 and 15W50. Sounds ideal for your local weather conditions although the overall quality of the Halford's own brand might, repeat might not be as good as something like Motel 300V. It will however be a damn sight cheaper so you can afford to change it a little more regularly. Andy

  3. Great reassurance from you Andy, I bought it and thought I may have gone too thin but that's sound advice. I change oil yearly regardless off miles anyway. Its the most important thing regards oil imo.

  4. Move :upyeah:

  5. A suggestion which has been considered many times over the years however in the case of this particular question a little extreme.

  6. In theory, 5/40 should be the same thickness when hot as 15/40 but thinner when cold. As most wear is reputed to take place at start up, due to cold, gloopy oil being unable to circulate properly, the 5/40 should be much more suitable in a cold climate

  7. One thing for sure, more oil changes is more effective than better quality for road use. :upyeah:

  8. I was talking to a local Ducati specialist and he said he had timed how long it took for oil to reach the head on a 900ss from a cold start, 90 seconds :0, he therefore uses Motul fully synthetic 10w 40 , his thinking being that it clings to the cam lobes etc whilst the engine is stationary and is there to provide lubrication during start up, he also said that he cringes when he sees people fire a bike up and immediately start revving like they are on the Daytona 200 start line !.

  9. 90 seconds? Does he by chance sell that exact oil to?? 90 seconds must be horse shit mate, unless you have no oil pump?? :D

  10. It’s possible that I may have remembered slightly incorrectly, could have been 60 seconds, but it was a considerable amount of time, that was the point of him telling me, no he wasn’t trying to sell me any oil I’d just changed mine, anyway he’s not that “sort” if you know what I mean, he’s well respected on here and always gives good advice, anyway I’ll see him soon and ask him again, it’s Nelly of Cornerspeed .

  11. Sorry mate, I ain't meaning to insult anyone but with a pump, oil can not take a minute or more to get up to a 30cm away head? Makes no sense dude ?

  12. Well as I said I’ll see him soon, within the next couple of weeks probably and I’ll check what he said and post it up on this thread, I remember being very surprised at the time so I’m sure it’s a considerable amount of time.

  13. It’s because cold oil is so gloopy

  14. Not 60 seconds mate, not even bitumen or whole crude is that "gloopy" or viscous. Pick your bike off the stand and look in the oil window when it's cold, it still moves around mate. sorry but 60 secs is crap.

PS, lock thread on that load of bollox? Come on ??

  15. If Nelly says so, that’s good enough for me.
Using thicker oil than the Russians is one of the things that did for the Germans in the Russian Winter

  16. It's not on the 2V Mark... Its the Desmo Quattro 748/916/996 motors. Many moons ago, when the motors were throwing cam rockers like no bodies', Neil Spalding measured oil flow from a cold start until it reached the oil distribution covers on the heads. Cold oil being pumped thru, what are basically brake lines takes a while, especially until full pressure is presented to the cams. The oil has many ways of passage and it'll always take the easiest route. The resistance to flow in the oil lines means that the oil will take other routes, at a higher flow, rather than try and squeeze up the lines to the heads. It's the main contributor to the plating falling off and why the motors should be warmed up at idle for as long as possible.....

  17. He was probably referring to reach full pressure and constant flow all round the engine, but even then should not be more than 20 sec with modern low viscosity oil. (if at all). I would say 90sec if old school mineral oil is to be used let's say 20W30.

  18. Wow, what have I started.... So I think any decent oil, changed regularly ( annually for me regardless of mileage) is just dandy.

As regards rocker flaking, I was of the understanding this was the four valves more than the 2 valves. I've seen worn rockers on some 2v heads but no flaking.

  19. I would even dare to say if you are doing less than 1500miles per year and used for medium-long blasts(engine warmed up properly so not too much condensation) you should be fine if you replace every 2 years but use Motul, Silkolene, Mobil1, Castrol. On yearly changes even semi-synthetic should be fine.
I am using whatever is cheaper out there for the road bikes but only well known brand and full synthetic.

The track bike is a different story...only Motul 300v 15W50 changed every 2-3 track days.

  20. Ah I see, apologies for the mis-quote there Neil, the old memory isn’t what it used to be , I’m 56 next week you know! (I know I don’t look it:)), fingers crossed for the 2v you’re fitting for me btw, always a voyage into the unknown with a 2nd hand unit :0
