Ohlins rear shock refurb

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by funkyrimpler, Sep 22, 2013.

  1. After fitting a rear racetec to my 916 ive had to dremel away the hugger. This has meant that all the road crap has hit the rear shock and basically sand blasted most of the paint off.
My bike is pretty immaculate and this lets its down...I dont have the tools/temper to remove the rear shock because i'll end up smashing it into pieces.....how much of a pain is it to get the bike to a trusted garage and have them send the shock away to get the spring powder coated/painted? I thought that while it was off, i may as well get the thing serviced too...
Any thoughts, also any idea of prices? cheers chaps

  2. a couple of hundred quid to have it resprung for you weight and serviced from memory

  3. how much of ball ache/what tools do i need to remove the barsteward, and what is the typical turnaround time for this type of job??
(its gonna be on my winter list)

  4. Well I have just replaced my rear spring today, luckily I have an Abba stand, removed the cans, rear wheel and hugger then the shock and fitted a new spring, took a couple of hours all including a bit of cleaning while I had access.
Try k teck for a price for shock service, there not to far from you.

  5. Shock is held in with two Allen bolts, you need an abba stand or somewhere to hold the rear end up.

  6. If you decide to have a go at removing it yourself your welcome to borrow my Abba stand and any tools needed.

  7. Well it's obviously cheaper to send the shock yourself, and as stated you probably want £2-300 to have a full service and set up for your weight. I use K-tech but I've heard good things about a few places.
I've also had the whole bike off the ground, supported by two ratchet straps over rafters in the garage so don't think you always need specific tools to do a job.
You can also buy shock guards for these. It's like half a tube of carbon that goes round the rear of the shock, clamping to the reservoir. I used one for a while before i went down the track only route and removed everything not needed.
