Hello I've not long owned my lovely 748 (about 31/2 weeks) so only really been out on her a few times, I noticed when I get home from a ride that I can smell oil burning somewhere; it's not really bad but a definite smell, and I've not been canning the bike at all - I've not had the chance to investigate it yet (father's day an all ;-) but wondered is this common for 748's? maybe oil is leaking somewhere onto something hot and causing it? Anyone have any places for me to check initially? Thanks in advance. Mark
yes mate, pressure sensor just unscrews 22mm if i remember correctly and rocker covers have a metal gasket under them, 4 6mm allen head bolts hold them on.
Could be something daft, like the oil filter being a little bit loose, allowing a drip onto the exhaust.
I'd say the same as cookster it could be the oil pressure sensor , does the oil light flicker on the dash and check for oil splashed on the inside of the right side fairing .
Any oil that runs down the cases will tend to go to the centre of the sump, and as mentioned, the exhaust is directly under that area and when the oil hits it you get smoke from the burning oil. How much you get will be an indication of how much oil is dripping on to the exhaust. If it's constant then you have a leak or strong seepage. If it's just a "puff" of smoke then you have maybe just a drip or two hitting the exhaust and then burning off, so then the smell should die away. Either way it bears investigation to make sure you are not losing a serious amount of oil. All the above points where it might leak should be checked and you may also have a leak from where the two halves of the crankcase join. Check the bottom crankcase screws to see if you have seepage through one of the holes where a bolt goes into the two halves. I have this on one of my bikes and it comes from a screw hole, it is just a drip or two that forms after a week or two of standing and it burns off as soon as I run the bike and it gets hot, after that it is fine.
I had a leak from the clutch centre oil seal, the oil would drip out of the clutch basket and onto the exhaust - also made the clutch slip though. Also the crankcase breathers are prone to leaking a little oil which, again can run down to the exhaust...
Cheers Red998 I will have a good look at the weekend and see what I can find, I have not seen any smoke but then again I have not sat watching her with the fairings off and engine running so I will do that. Thanks again.
I need to have a good look at my haynes manual to see where all this is, thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated.
