My MTS 2013 now has 15000 miles , never used to use any oil,but I would say in the last 3000 miles has used about 1.25 litres of oil. I always keep the oil level at the max mark. This weekend I have covered about 700 miles and it was down to the min mark,so it used about 300cc for the 700 miles. Is this a worry? I should add,no leaks and no smoke from exhaust etc.
Personally I would not be worried, Ducati Quote up to 1 litre per thousand miles and whilst the mileage you quote is not high its not new either, I would just keep a track of the oil you put in.
My 2011 MTS has done 30,000 miles and has never needed the oil topping up at all between oil changes. I must say that a litre per thousand miles sounds far too much to me.
Mine pretty much never used oil either between oil changes, 11.5k, in fact I actually changed the oil between last oil service due as not happy having same oil for so long in an engine. Personally if it goes from never using to using that much, I would think about what to do with it. Ducati might quote 1 Litre per 1000 miles, my view that is a cop out quote, "we know there is something wrong but lets hope it ends out of warranty". If any engine of mine used that much per 1000, I would be pissed off, unless ofc it was designed to do so, or an RX8, but even that did not use nothing like that
What worries me is that at say 11000 miles it used no oil, then to the current situation. Do some oils have a higher consumption rate than others maybe?
I'm no expert and dont ride a Multi but types of oil do make a difference in general. All this said , I wouldn't be worrying too much at this point if everything else is ok, just keep an eye on it. There's a lot of oil under the minimum mark and bikes don't like being over full. I'd keep it at the mid level mark and see how it goes.
Yes depending on viscosity, and quality, but why would you use a different oil? and for it to use that much all of a sudden it really has to be quite a different oil I would have thought
I know that the dealer changed oil supplier,so,it has a different oil from the 7500 mile service onwards. So it's due 15000 mile service next month. I shall mention the oil consumption again, and monitor carefully after the service. The bike is out of warranty.
Hmmm different oil ay? you mean cheep oil. ok may be that's why it's using more than normal, but you gota ask is it harming your clutch or gears if it's cheep oil? Shell Advance Ultra 4 is around £13 for 4 litres that's pardon the pun a drop in the ocean compared to the damage a cheap oil might do. have you checked your oil cooler or feed pipes for holes?
Silkolene has a reputation for high consumption, as it happens I have recently purchased a honda 250 and changed the oil soon after I got it, my local garage only had Silkolene so I tried it for the first time ever, the bike is now smoking slightly, didn't before the oil change. Only Motul 300v goes into the Ducati and will soon be in the Honda. Steve
Thanks everyone,I have 2 points to consider , firstly I think it is silkolene in there, and secondly I always had it filled to the max marker,so will try the halfway point and use a different brand of oil too.
My bike is 6 months out of warranty,so as a precaution I have made contact with my Ducati dealer to log the situation, and they are contacting Ducati UK to discuss it too.i feel at this stage Ducati UK will say the consumption is well within tolerance. They have just replaced another quite expensive part as a gesture of goodwill,so they are very approachable and fair, with so far very good customer service. Much better than most manufacturers I think!
I wonder if Ducati who I assume serviced your bike when in warranty would put anything else but the recommended oil in it, but once out of warranty they put in oil inferior?
It was under warranty at the 7500 mile service, which was the last service, done at authorised Ducati dealership.
I have never had any oil puke anywhere on any bike I have ever had filling oil level to where I do, I know there can be a problem if you over over fill it, so I must be getting it just right, well for my style of riding anyhow
