Advice needed Enthusiasm got the better of me and decided to remove oil filter bolt during oil change of my 750 ss now I have a problem the bolt is out but the filter is trapped in hole. Anyone had this problem before and is there an easy solution Any help would be much appreciated
I honestly can't recall if the head is detachable from the screen or not.......but in the case of the OP it looks like you are right Derek.
On my 996 and 999 there is an outer bolt/nut then the oil screen itself has a thread and also needs unscrewing. On the 999 the screen was blocked with thick oil so the screen had disformed so even when unscrewed struggled to come out. Eventually she came with some persuasion.
Couldn't resist.......... .......anyway, the OP has a stuck screen filter it seems, so somehow he has to get it out without damaging it.......... .......so how does he do it? The only thing I can think of is hooking it with a fishhook...the point being sharp enough to get into the solid nylon, without damaging the thread. I have a barbed spike for use in fishing...........for poking through bait and pulling a line through it.....looks a bit like this.
You are right it filter 19 sorry about the poor description. Is the filter threaded as it does not want to pull through. From the Haynes manual I can't really tell
On my 996 and 999, yes. you should see a hex head for a large allen key. The spark plug spanner fits.
No it's not threaded inside the engine as such.........if it is threaded at all it would be to join to the bolt head......you should be able to pull it out.
Around '98/'99, probably with the introduction of the 3-phase crankcases, the filter screen changed to an internal screw in unit with a 14mm hex socket and an external cover with the same 14mm hex.
Wow, never come across that before. I've got an M600 Y2K model year, a 1993 900ss, a 1959 175TS and have also had a 2004 ST4 and all of them have had the filter screen attached to a single bolthead?
It is detachable, I removed mine to drill for a bolt to fit a temp sensor and I wanted to fit a bolt from the inside as the head's brass and not very thick so I didn't trust a thread to not come loose whilst riding. But it is a tight fit on the head so if it's old and it's fallen off I suspect it may have broken. Also not sure if the filter part is available on it's own? as I couldn't find one when I was looking so I had to buy the whole thing (after breaking a filter during removal) but IIRC it wasn't particularly expensive. Unless, as above, it's one of the 2-piece versions that later bikes have?
Here's the later 2 piece one, complete with temperature sensor. It seems to have been introduced across the range for 2001. The ST4 stopped production on 2003 and this may not have been fitted to them.
