Hi Guy’s, Got a massive leak dripping out of the clutch cover. What I have done so far : Changed the 2 pushrod O rings. Changed the pushrod oil seal (2) on the input shaft (4) Now that I am writing this, I discover that the endfloat (1)shim is missing .... Could that be the reason ? What is the inside/outside of the pushrod oil seal ? (2) Appreciating some advise
Your the second person this week with this issue, i personally haven't had this happen to me but i think if you had put it under technical help you might get a better response.
Sam, there are a couple of rings in-board of the clutch pressure plate top hat, and another the other side of the basket, is the big 95mm clutch housing seal ok? The push rod o rings can be easily damaged due to burrs on the crankcase on the slave side cutting them but that should not show as a big leak in the clutch housing. Is the push rod clean and smooth and the needle bearing inboard that seal ok. Is that the end float shim on the splined part of the shaft ( there are 5 different sizes available)? Looks like you are due a new basket soon Download the parts book and factory manual for more info
+1 for Chris’ suggestion, all that oil on the clutch side fairing that’s not down to a failure on the push rod o rings IMO. But don’t fret it’s easy enough to replace if that is the issue, at least if I can do it anyone else ought be able too.
That looks absolutely fine. I wouldn’t change it if not needed theyre fiddly to reseat correctly. It just seems so much oil to have just migrated along the push rod
Thx for the advice. Just did that. There is some oil stack. I can replace the o ring. No visual damage, but time can reduce the functionalities. Can you see something strange on the pictures ? Thx
The type of oil lip seal that runs on the spacer can can cut in to the surface, the lips can also wear/harden. Clean the outer surface with some scotchbrite. The seals don't work well on polished/shiny surfaces. Oil can also track through the 8 clutch basket screws, if the thread lock has failed.
I found a small puddle of oil underneath my 748R one morning at Portimao. It got progressively worse and seemed to be related to higher rev laps. I got it back and cleaned off the inside of the right-side fairing and back of the engine. It was definitely a clutch issue. Next time out at Almeria all seemed good. Then it wasn't. The leak was not significant, but needed cleaning off after each session. Then it became a lot worse and a nice slide out of turns 13/14 after the long straight max revs saw me very gingerly head back to the pits. In spite of a lot of very kind folk offering help it wan't until I got home and Paul Goodall @ PGP took it apart he discovered a bent push rod that had wrecked the seal. Took that opportunity to change belts, check clearances, replace worn rockers, heavier rear spring and new seals, fork oil & seals, oil and filters. Now just need a track day.
Is the oil seal at the clutch end of the shaft (where the pushrod sticks out) fitted the right-way round? Because if it is fitted backwards then oil will pass by it. Don't ask how I know...
Update : oil leak problem is solved. To make a long story short : the push rod oil seal was not seated like it should in the input shaft. You need to ‘hamer’ it in with a ‘cilinder shaped ‘ driver. (Flat side of the seal is out). Anyway, I overhauled all the oil seals, rings and some other parts. Learned a lot ! Thx for the Advice.
