Dear All Anyone know how i can clear my oil level glass on my 796 Hypermotard, its so foggy I really cannot see how much oil is in there... Oil and filter replaced 500 miles ago, have tried leaving in in my heated garage but no joy at all.. Many thanks Noods
This problem is probably down to condensation. Best way to clear this is to get the engine hot, best after a good run, and then remove the oil filler cap, and leave for a while, maybe over night, to allow the condensate to escape to atmosphere. Obviously don't forget to replace filler cap. If it doesn't all clear the first time, repeat.
As Crystajohn says take it out for a good run, all day (100+ miles) would be a good idea and ride it reasonably hard as well. Sounds like you've been doing too many short journies in cold weather.
I think taking it for a good run with the correct oil level is a good idea, reason: the white sludge/gunk you describe is one of the oil additives that is there to capture the moisture, it will collect in the coldest parts of the motor until such time that the motor is hot enough to boil the moisture and pump it out of the breather. never under any circumstance be tempted to wipe this sludge away as you will be loosing the oil additive as well as the moisture. when its gone its gone.
yes you dont want to clean the inside of the sight glass, lordy, unless your like that bloke from the xfiles
