Oil weep from engine case..... need quick fix.....

  1. Chaps / Chapesses,

Just doing bike prep for Jerez and found that I have a slight oil weep from the engine casing just above the clutch on the right hand side. Not significant to lose oil, but enough for it to be coming out and leaving a few drips of oil down the outside the clutch case.......

It's clearly weeping from the gasket area just above the clutch. I don't have time to get it back to the dealer for them to re-do it (it was just serviced), so wondered if there was a quick-fix external sealant I could use for a few days just until I get back from track - when I can get them to re-seal the engine casing properly.

Wondered if I could just apply a little external gasket sealant (which type?!) to the crack line where the oil is weeping between the case and engine block......

Any advice gratefully received at this point. Waited 6 months to get the bike back from the dealer waiting for parts from Ducati only to find this about two days before I am due to be back on track!!!

Nelly - others - any help gratefully received.

  2. Not sure what bike it is, but as a general idea, the external application of "gasket goo" will do little to help. Possibly you could try to slacken off slightly the culprit area, try to squeeze the "gasket goo" into the offending area, let it start to go off, then slowly start to torque the cover screws (or whatever) down in the hope the hylomar, or similar has got in and sealed the interface.

    good luck sorting.

  3. Use a solvent to get rid of all the oil and then use metal putty along the area that's leaking.

Will have the strength to hold the oil in under pressure. Might have to be chiseled off but should come away on one lump.

  4. Not sure what they use on the Pani but other models use threebond gasket sealant, you could trying tipping the bike over (resting it on some tyres) to let the oil drain away from the clutch, undo the casing, clean up, apply sealant, bolt up and go... No real need to wait.

Used to do this every now and again at DD races

  5. Guys,

Thanks for the input. Am going to have to run to Halfrauds, see what types of gasket sealant they have there and see what I can do as an immediate fix. Given that it's on the Desmo then will have to go careful. Will try and do the best I can, then if it gets worse I will just have to open it all up and do it again properly.

It isn't weeping much, but enough that a few drips come out and form a tiny puddle on the top of the clutch - which would be about half a teaspoonful of oil every few hours. So I can always just wipe and keep an eye on it. But as someone above says, it will be under pressure and there will be a tiny hairline crack in the engine cover gasket that it is just being forced through gently.

Am just bloody irritated that I waited 6 months to get the bike back with one problem, only to find this two days before it goes back out on track.....

  6. As its on the top of the casing it might be worth using a fine blade to make a slight v groove in the top of the gasket and run some thin superglue into it, thin superglue is self wicking and will find its way into the leak.
I know its a long shot but worth a try.

  7. so on Desmosedici? - efcPete has good suggestion of at least checking how tight periphery allen bolts are - particularly as possibly only just removed/replaced?
