Paint Or Powder Coat?

  1. Hi Guys..
I'm looking to turn my gloss black 5 spoke marchessinis matt black.. Do I go spray paint or powder coat?

    Cheers

  2. Paint get damaged quicker and more by stone chips IMO.......

I had some wheels done in the 80s.........they were gloss black nylon coated.......don't know if the application was by powder or by a spray process..........but that didn't chip at all.

Don't do frames with it though..........it will sag or curtain when it is near the heat of the engine.

  3. I remember when nylon coating was popular, it is sprayed on and cured in an oven the same as powder coating, rear carriers used to be a favourite for that treatment

  4. Red...

My engine has two colours a dark metalic grey on cam covers etc and a silver metallic .. Are we talking halfords for these heat resistant colours

  5. Try polyurethane wheel paint if your using aerosols - it's a little flexible, but remember - it's all in the prep - light rub down and solvent / thinners before spraying.

  6. The two colours are from the 2 different models, the dark colour is early and the silver was the later colour from about 1999 onwards depending on model. The dark engine colour is actually now available from RS bike paints but it is water based.

The side cases do get hot so you will need a decent heat resistant paint. What colour do you want the engine to be? as if you wanted black for example then there are some good heat resistant paints more readily available and cheaper overall.

If you want it silver then something like high temp. paint would work for the cases. They ideally need to be stripped to bare metal if applying heat resistant paint as if not the old paint may\will bubble and ruin the finish.

If you want the Dark bronze as it is known then it can be bought here :-

The cheapest option is to go for black and there are plenty of heat proof paints on eBay both gloss and matt.

    Hi Red..
    Thanks for that..

Mine is stripped back to metal .. It's a 796 engine 2010 model..

I would like a bright silver as per pic and the dark bronze on the rocker covers etc.. As per pic..
    Many thanks

  8. RS paints do heat resistant Aluminium paint which is matt :- RS Bike Paint Products - Motorcycle paint, touch-up, aerosol, spray gun. Kawasaki Honda Yamaha

They don't list the bronze but you may get a match from a RAL chart. They do metallics as well. A Google search will bring up plenty of RAL colour chart images. RAL colours can also be powdercoated.

    RAL Color Chart | www.RALcolor.com

If you go to a paint supplier you can also look through their RAL charts and make a note of the colour and if necessary go elsewhere and buy it cheaper. Ebay is a good place to buy cheap RAL colours, I have found one supplier who will do a litre of paint with hardener for £30.

  9. Would these ral colours on e bay etc be heat resistant..

I've used Phil at RS paint a few times now.. Very good..

  10. It depends on what the paint base is. RAL colours are just formulas so you could no doubt ask to have it in whatever base you want it in, so it could be water, 2 pack, cellulose etc.

RAL colours are used in industry so there would be a heat resistant formulation. One of them is intumescent, it is sprayable and can be formulated to RAL colours.

Most heat on a Ducati comes from the alternator side, the clutch side tends to remain cooler. When I cleaned up my 748R engine I used gloss high temp paint from ebay and that worked well, I assume colour match is important to you though and no doubt a high temperature formulation for a RAL colour will be more expensive.
