1200 Painting/spraying Ali

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Nickmts12, Jun 30, 2015.

  1. Hi,

My first post so sorry in advance if it's in wrong place (not easy on a mobile).

I have recently bought my first multistrada it's a 2012 S. I have bought a termi stubby but want to spray/paint the Ali shield black along with the Ali guard of the sane finish on the left of the bike. Having looked at the 2011 pikes peak these seem to be black and personally I prefer the look.

Would I need a special paint to get the finish or am I barking up the wrong tree. Tried to find genuine parts but not seen anything as yet

    Thanks in advance
    Nick

  2. Nick,

Pop it in the dishwasher to de-grease it, then rub it down with wire wool to slightly roughen it, to allow the paint to key. Then use Simoniz Tough Black aerosol, satin black looks good on the Multistrada. I did my belly pan the same way and it looks excellent and is lasting well.

    Cheers. Jon.

  3. Great thanks. I was just a little worried on my limited spraying capabilities. Might give it a try

  4. Lots of thin coats, and keep spraying off the edge of the piece, and before you go on to it, if that makes sense. Just don't rush it and it will turn out great. If you get a run, rub it down and start again!! This weather is perfect for spraying, hang it up and get started! Jon.

  5. Ideally if you want to paint then an alloy etch primer should be used as peeling can occur. Etch primer does not however stand up to heat that well so powdercoating is a better option.

  6. I painted my heat shield flat black with VHT [ very high temp ] header silica ceramic paint from a spray bomb about $20.00 and good for 704 - 1093 celsius , sand piece down with Scottish brite pad , clean off with degreaser , hang up by wire hanger in shed so no wind , give 2 light coats and 1 medium coat with drying time between coats not to exceed 60 minutes and then bake in oven at 120 C for 30 minutes cool 30 minutes then 200 C and then 315 C with same bake and cool time for each temp , paint has held up great .

  7. I just took mine to a local firm that does powder coating (google search), smile ask for a price and choose a colour like gloss black - I also did the rear pass hangers - about 20-30 squid as they put it in with "something else"
