1260 Panniers & Exhaust Heat

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Nasher, Jun 29, 2025.

  1. My 1260 Enduro came with a set of Aluminium Panniers which I've not really used yet, preferring to just pop the topbox on for what I've needed since I brought it.

I'm planning some longer overnight trips shortly and will need the Panniers.

The Right Hand side one is one of those that has a cut out over the exhaust, and there is a small heatshield fitted.

It's a simple question really, should I be at all concerned about what I pack in that Pannier towards the bottom with respect to heat from the exhaust?
Does it get hot in there?
Is it likely to damage my tent, sleeping bag etc?

Just wondering if anyone can shed any light from direct experience.

    Thanks

  2. Mmm, the plastic pannier on the exhaust side had an external heat barrier with an air gap and I never noticed the contents getting hot. There really shouldn’t be an issue but as a precaution, I wouldn’t pack heat sensitive material like synthetics. Push comes to shove, line the inside face next to the exhaust with a cotton bath towel. Andy

  3. Thanks Andy.

I think as usual I'm overthinking this, I'm doing a lot of that lately.

I've just had a better look and it doesn't appear to be a problem, I'll get some images later to show why.

  4. Warm the bike up and then put your hand in the pannier (carefully) to see how hot it got?

  5. There is a difference between the Left hand and right hand panniers.

The right hand one does have an additional 'L' shaped bit of tinware riveted to the outside as a heat shield:

And on the inside there is some Neoprene rubber:

On the bike both would appear to be in exactly the right place to reduce any heat build up, but I think I'll try sticking some heat shield material on the outside of the pannier on the curved surface inside the exhaust cut-out.:

  6. I think the added bonus of aluminium is that it does dissipate heat well.

I made the mistake of fitting ally rads indoors and the buggers go cold 10 mins after the heating goes off : unamused:

  7. Our bike of choice for our Canadian adventure last year was the 1260 Enduro, fitted with the same ally panniers, we also used inner bags, very unlikely you'll have anything to worry about regarding heat damage, we had no issues at all!
