HI I have a 1981 600 sl it spent 17 years in a barn. I have checked and cleaned all components The bike will not start it will back fire occasionally it has 168/154 compression new fuel rebuilt carbs and spark My question is does the engine have to be in a certain rotation before you set the timing marks or do you just line up all three marks? the only things I can think to try is timing or not enough spark. Any help would be appreciated. Not sure where to go from here. Thanks Owen
I'm not sure what you mean by "line up all three marks". To set the timing: Rotate the engine to the timing position. ie TDC on the horizontal cylinder with all valves closed at the beginning of the firing stroke. The dot on the lower belt pulley will be lined up with the line on the RH engine cover. See that the lines at the centre of each pick up aligns with its corresponding dot on the flywheel and adjust as necessary. The gap between the pickups and bump on the flywheel should be 0.35-0.40mm. Excerpt from manual: The Timing can be checked using a strobe. If all that is in order have you got the plug leads the right way round? Or swapped round the two pickup wires to the ignition units?
Exactly what my brother had done in 1983 after spending a week trying to find a faulty component or set up issue on his 500
Hi Just wanting to check everything. Looking at the timing belt installation can you tell me the correct procedure? The three line I was referring to are the crank mark and the two belt marks. when setting belts what rotation should the engine be in? is it TDC vertical cylinder? if they are in the incorrect alignment how do I check to see that I am at the correct fire position? Thanks again Owen
When the dot on the lower pulley aligns with the line on the RH engine cover the horizontal cylinder is at TDC at the beginning of the firing stroke and the vertical is halfway down the inlet stroke with the inlet valve fully open. This is the timing position where the engine should be when fitting the belts and all the dots are lined up. This sets the cam timing, it has no bearing on the spark timing. Get it wrong and you risk bent valves or worse. If you haven't got a workshop manual PM me and I'll send you a link.
Hi Thanks again If you could send the link for the manual that would be great. The one I have did not go into the detail you sent. If you have access to a wire diagram that would help as well. Hope to be running to go on a trip later this July. Thanks Owen will keep you informed of progress.
