996 Pc3

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Cream_Revenge, Jun 9, 2016.

  1. Hey
Anyone know if a PC111 model 704-210 will be ok for a 996? From what I've googled it's for a 748 so will it be ok?

    TIA

  2. 748, 916 & 996 use the same PC3, they will need different maps of course. SP, SPS etc. models maybe different as they have a different ECU?

  3. So I just need to upload the right map? I assume I can just download it from the Power commander website?

  4. Should be some basic maps on there, ideally you want a custom tune.

I've just looked back at my notes, I had a PC3 for a while on the 916 and it was a 705-411 so not sure what a 704-210 is?

  5. It's for a 748, just not sure if it's ok for a 996.

  7. With the model year spread, the paperwork gives you the impression that it will work with both the P8 and the later 1.6M ECU although it looks like you have the earlier PC3 not the PC3 USB. At best the standard maps are a compromise and you need to match a map to the EPROM you have fitted. I paid about £250 to have a custom map for a PC3 USB to match a race EPROM I found through the forum. It has worked very well for me although not everyone is a fan of the technology. Andy

  8. The best way to go is for a custom map to be placed onto your ECU chip, which means a dyno run with someone like CJS etc . The PC3 only has 11 parameters that you can work with and will only give a broad spread of fuelling, nothing liked the detailed setup that a custom ECU map will provide.

They also can and do go wrong.

I had one on my 998 and although it cost the best part of £400 to buy and have setup it wasn't really worth it and it broke down within a short space of time, in the end i took it off and the bike was fine.

Any map taken from a site for the PC3, will, as mentioned, only be a rough map and may bear no real reflection of what your bike is running like and how it is fuelling.

  9. Sounds a bit shit really. Rode 996 Wednesday and fueling is not good so thought this may be a cheap fix.

  10. No it's not a cheap fix unless you are lucky enough to have or get hold of a PC3 at a very cheap price and then find a decent map that seems to work.

This is older technology now and even The Power commanders have moved on.

They never were that good originally but they were better than a lot of other methods at the time.

The real route is dyno time and a custom map with good fuelling, individual mapping of cylinders and a sensible rev limit imposed. It's not cheap but it will transform the bike.

  11. I have had my 996 since 98. I thought about a pc but decided on an ultmap chip instead. Never had any fueling problems since.

  12. I take it you can just try different maps till you find one your happy with?

  13. If it is the USB model then it is easy enough to try them out. What you won't know is if you have a hole in your fuelling unless it is very obvious, as you might pass through that band when riding but if you do subsequently hit it at any point then it may well be noticeable.

My 998 had lots of holes in the mid range fuelling which were not noticeable and to be fair the Powercommander improved things when I had it set up but then proved to be unreliable so much so that the bike ran very badly and would not rev properly.

I took it off and all was fine again. You may not always know if it's the map or the powercommander itself.

Ultimap went bust some time ago so that is no longer an option unless you buy secondhand.

  14. If the running has got worse, I'd look to isolate the cause because the EPROM/ECU are usually reliable. It could be something as simple as shitty fuel, dirty plugs or one of the more common faults like the TPS losing its zero. When was the last time you had the fuel pump assembly out to change the filter ? Whilst the tanks off, you can whip out the spark plugs as well :D. Andy

  15. I know but tgey do crop up on ebay from time to time. There was one on ebay tge other day

  16. Mmmm, that has some age, computer serial port gives it away. What EPROM did you get with the race cans ? Andy

  17. Just had another thought, was the original exhaust 45mm, 45/50mm half system or full 50mm ? Andy

  18. bike came with a non-standard chip that no amount of googling and several chats with knowledgable chaps have shed any light on.

I bought the bike with road legal OEM 50mm cans and stuck on 50mm open Termis. I'm not sure if the 2001 996 Bp came with 45mm or 50mm as standard.

I guess I just need to spend £400 but I thought that ebay item might be worth a punt if i could get it for £20.

Bike is fully serviced a 6 months/500mls ago with new plugs, and all filters.

  19. If you are happy to take a punt for £20, I'd source an OE EPROM which come up frequently on here and eBay although I wouldn't buy from Eastern Europe which tend to be clones. I'll have a dig around and see if I can confirm what the original exhaust should have been. I know the sps was 50mm but I have at the back of my mind the early 996 had a 45mm system. Andy
