Lazy/inaccurate expression. Example 1: Islamophobia. A phobia is an irrational fear of something. I would argue - no matter what liberal apologists for terrorism would argue - that fear of Islam is rational because its holy book appears to lend itself to a strict interpretation that enables adherents to regard non-followers of that faith as infidels who deserve to die. Agree ye not? Any other pet hates or examples of mine out there?
I would add that though the Koran is scathing in its criticism of other faiths, according the the Muslim founder of the Quillam Foundation, it permits no one to comment on its own validity or values. Such hypocrisy is another of my pet hates, as typified by champagne socialists.
spellingandgrammaraphobia- People who correct others spelling on forums to feel superior when its supposed to be relaxed atmosphere and not an english lesson.
Not a question of feeling superior, just upholding standards - as I'm sure Aircontechnical would agree, before you get to (too) wound up!
Not sure where you got that from either. I rarely see a totally relaxed conversation. People often seem to enjoy a bit of conflict and assertive banter.
I think you need to include "punctuation" in the name of that phobia ! But I resist the urge to make any suggestions regarding correct insertion of apostrophes in this case.
Thanks for your support. I'd hate to see the forum degenerate into a middle-aged version of textspeak. And well done for resisting!
People who believe in fairy stories, including all religions, the occult, astrology, telepathy, spontaneous human combustion and anything else that cannot be proved. Though obviously, as a humanist, I don't hate them that much. Not as much as scooter riders and people who cycle on the pavement anyway!
However did we survive on the internet before you came along to uphold standards..... Its an internet forum , to talk about bikes. Nothing more , nothing less. All these silver surfers waving their walking sticks at the screen because us youngsters made an error. "back in my day we spoke properly on our forums"
WHAT, you'll be telling me there's no tooth fairy next.... I hate people who don't believe in stuff... Yeah that's it, oh and humanists as well... Them especially.
Er we didn't, because forums didn't exist. It's not a question of upholding standards for the sake of it. It's about making sure that which is intended is understood. Let's eat, grandma or Let's eat grandma? There's a world of difference, I'm sure you'll agree. And it is quite a small request surely - even for those who are somewhat hard of thinking?
Don't lump spontaneous combustion in with this. Spontaneous human combustion exists and I saw a good programme where it was scientifically explained (a lot of internal gas is produced). I'm still agnostic about some telepathy. Sceptical but agnostic.
