Those poor men I can't imagine. I chap said what I said he thought drowning was a better death then burning poor poor souls .
Because of my job I've had to watch countless videos and go through hours of safety briefs regarding what went wrong on Piper Alpha and the biggest laugh is that it happened again but the same end result was narrowly averted and they cleared the platform of all personnel for a few days until the gas cleared. I've got a short video clip showing the choppers circling the platform and literally diving in, filling up with men then getting the hell out of dodge but unfortunately I'm not supposed to have it so can't post it anywhere. According to the guy who filmed it everything was going well until someone decided to fire up some re-circulating fans and it set off a series of small explosions scaring the bloke checking everyone off on a muster sheet so much that he just dived on the next chopper and left them to it. I used to hate working offshore apart from the Gulf of Mexico where I could sunbathe on the helideck.
I have seen a good deal about this as part of my previous job... A very sad event. It has to be said that things have changed a great deal since then, and a lot of lessons learnt. It's just a shame that in the case of marine safety ( as is ofetn the case with aviation too ) people have to die before anything changes.
Anth - people, unfortunately, forget. And then become complacent because it hasn't happened for years. Sadly it will probaly take another big event to get attention back on the subject...
I'm very sorry if this thread has caused a problem . I posted the original post because I was saddened and horrified when I watched the documentary . I don't wish to add fuel to the fire so maybe it's best this is deleted or locked as I posted this because I was very saddened by the documentary I also don't feel that any amount of money compensates the loss of loved one ..not all the money in the world. Not in my eyes I'm sorry.
I wrote a unnecessary comment on this thread last night. Was meant to be funny. Apologies if anyone took offence !
It would appear that the "unnecessary" posts have been removed. There is nothing funny about 167 men dieing in a blazing inferno...
It was removed by me !...........and it was a comment about the wording of one of the posts and not the tragedy.
Fair enough - and at least you had the moral fortitude to admit you had made a mistake. Your wasn't the only post to be removed though - hence my comments...
