Poorly 748 :-(

  1. i've my 748 since last spetember and has been as good as gold since then aprt from the odd niggle here and there. Up until today that is.
coming home from work she dies on me, not completely but as soon as i give her some throttle she doesn't want to know. she doesn't completely cut out but very irratic. i've had similar problems on the SS which proved to be fuel filter but in those cases the SS would fire up ok if left for 5 or 10 mins. both cylinders are firing. obviously plugs and filter to check but anyone had the same or similar that can be more specific???

  2. I may be showing my ignorance on the 748 engine but, could it be the temp sensors on the cylinders as i have had similar sorts of issues on an ST2 and it turned out to be a safety thing.
having not looked at a 748 engine i am not sure if you have the same set up as the ST?

    just my 2p's worth :)

  3. funny you should mention that paul......she did appear bloody hot with the engine ticking a good un'. i'd just left work and was pootling about for 20 mins or so through the town in rush hour. my first comment to self was how hot she felt and why the radiator fan wasn't whizzing around. but saying that, she's cooled right down since i was rescued an hour or so ago but still the same. how did you rectify ur st2?

  4. Does the bike still turn over on the starter ok? Could be the reg/rec is/has packed up.

Next time check that the lights are still bright when the engine is running. If it is the reg/rec the panel lights will also go dim.

  5. electrics all fine duke. everything works and shefires into life at the push of the button but it's only when she fires up, she's sick as a pig. something else to add, she was occassionally backfiring to an extent where it shook my bloody seat.

  6. Sounds like lean running to me. Check the fuel filter and the hoses inside the tank - these can split meaning a drop in fuel pressure (and subsequently a lack of fuel) to the injectors. Excessive bubbling or turbulence within the fuel in the tank could indicate this

  7. when you turn the ignition on and flick the stop switch, the noise of the pump ( i assume it's the pump, lasts about 2 seconds) is more prominant the usual i must admit. i'm gona have to perform minor surgery in the morning to check that out as well as the filter.

  8. Yep, my guess is a split hose which is very common, but let me know!

  9. symptoms do suit a split fuel pump hose, similar unit fitted to the Integrale etc also suffering with the same early symptoms.

  10. thanks all, i'll keep you posted :upyeah:

  11. No individual temp sensors on the cylinders on 748, 916 etc.

Does sound like it could be an internal fuel pressure leak - not enough to stop it but enough to make it run lean.

  12. split fuel hose it is!! thank you so much chaps. just confirms how important a forum like this is and of course has potentially saved me a packet.

  13. Great news.
    Steve.

  14. No problem, great stuff!
