Porting Work.

  1. I could have put the thread title as "head polishing" but fear id get lost in a sea of double entenders...

Anyway....as above - i never made it to Ducati John this weekend for a shitty reason but, the plan is for him to strip the motor to the crankcases and me to bring all said parts back with me to get coated....i thought, while it was in its component pieces for said coating work i could do some basic porting work.

20+ years ago on 2 strokes the first thing that most of us did was to polish the exhaust port and inlet port out at its most very basic (knife edging the air intake was also popular). Moving on, on my GSXR 7-11 i had at the time while that was apart having the big ends done....sounds strange i know but i gave the head to my wife (go with me on this) and she took it into work (at the time she worked in a dental lab) and had access to all the fine polishing and sanding tools. She spent about 3 or 4 evenings polishing all the inlet and exhaust ports. The net result was pretty impressive. Stock the bike used to make it to about 140 (streetfighter with no fairing) and then crawl round to 155. After the work was done. Straight to 155 and pulled harder through the whole range also. The other thing to note was that it made the bikes engine alot smoother, literally, to ride...

So, question is, is it worth doing the same thing.? ie just basic polishing, not taking anything off the exhaust ports or anything fancy. Ive kinda got this one chance, as it were to do this so wanted to take advantage of any opportunities while i can.

  2. Yes, I needed new guides in my evo at 40k miles so was the opportunity, when you look at the std exhaust port there is way too much metal in around the valve guide obcuring flow. I removed loads of metal. Dif it make a difference? Yes, pulls harder everywhere especially top end, didnt loose any low end drivabillity.
Get the dremel out. You will have to take care of not touching valve seats as you need to go in from both ends of the port.

  3. Confirms what i thought - got any pics of the work done? and i take it your talking exhaust side only....i had read that leaving the fuel side dimpled atomizes the fuel better....

  4. Take some before and after pics. I didnt..
Yes just did the exhaust. Though i did match inlet with manifolds.
