I am about to Kreem Complete Petrol/Gas Fuel Sealer Kit Including Prep Solutions & Sealant on my ST4S tank. Instructions say make sealing plates either end out of metal and rubber. I can just about manage this on the base but the filler is going to take too much precision with the tools I have. I saw another site mention making bungs out of news paper and plastic bags. Can this work. Comments welcome
Not used this particular sealant , but you just need to stop the coating escaping as you rotate the tank So think rubber gloves rather than paper and you should be fine
Looks very similar to POR15 which means if you get any of the fluids on a painted surface, the paint will lift. I used a Duct tape wrapped plastic lid off a large sweet jar to seal where the pump fitted and a Duct tape wrapped old shampoo bottle for the petrol cap hole. Don't forget to block the breather holes as well. I would also suggest that you mask the paint around both openings. I drained the lining paint through the drain plug so had to run a tap through to clean the thread. I would also leave the lining paint at least 5 days to cure before introducing petrol. It's not a difficult job if you prepare and handle the fluids meticulously. My track tank was done 2 or 3 years ago after I stressed a joint and I have not had a problem since. Andy
Many thanks to you both. I was also looking at the lab type rubber tapered bungs as an option. However, a guy on the US forum made a good point. My tank does not actually leak. it is just a little rusty at the top and nothing too bad at that. Am I going with overkill here?
If rust has started to appear, the likelyhood of the original protective coating on the steel deteriorating is high so probably not. Consider it preventative maintenance. Andy
