President Obama

  1. I see on the news that Obama has decided to end his political career and bypass Congress to enable him to bring in new gun controls.Just watch the whole country turn on him - headed up by the NRA gun nuts who are hugely powerful, very wealthy and backed up by some very big celebrity names.Goodbye Obama!

  2. Well, his career is over anyway as his presidency ends in November. He cannot run for another term. I fear any attempts he makes will be futile but at least he's trying to do SOMETHING.

  3. I can only guess that he has a terminal illness and doesn't mind the certainty that some nutjob is going to try to end his presidency early.

If the nutjob is successful, we'll probably see race riots to dwarf those of the 60's.

  4. I'm not sure what he plans to do. He was on the news this morning saying he believes it is possible to "protect the right" to bear arms under the Second Amendment but keep guns out of the hands of nutters. Good luck with that..
To my mind its the Second Amendment that's the problem. Its not so much a question of how many guns it allows to be in circulation, but why, and that is at the heart of America's pathological relationship with firearms. It effectively means that the State sanctions the possession of firearms for no other purpose but self-defence and the commission of violence by one citizen against another. It militarises firearms and permits the private citizen to hold them as weapons (including, indeed, military weapons) and not as tools only to be used for non-martial purposes. It means that firearms are carried on the person in public places; that loaded weapons sit in car glove boxes; that weapons lie around casually in homes where almost anyone can lay hands on them and are not kept under secure conditions. It guarantees a free-for-all with no concept of authorised access.
The US needs a sea-change in its relationship with firearms. The "right to bear arms" is an anachronism which condemns US society to live in a state of perpetual wild west siege. It should be replaced by the conditional "possession of firearms" by approved persons only for specific legitimate and peaceful purposes. That is how the the rest of the civilised world does it.
Under-pinning the current wrong headedness is the Second Amendment. Re-wording won't do. It must go. By pledging to retain it Obama has (excuse the pun) shot himself in the foot before he starts.

  8. Currently there is a groundswell of opinion supporting gun control, and backing both Obama and Democrat candidate Bernie Sanders. Who knows, maybe the people who are fed up with 10,000 Americans every year being killed by handguns will finally gain the upper hand. Or maybe the local yokel, inbred, NRA supporting fuck-wits will shoot them all...

  9. Yeah, my money's on the latter, alas. :-(
