Tell me I'm wrong for I often am.. Watching these interceptor programs and the cop cars catching out people without car insurance mot's etc. Clever stuff that numberplate recognition technology, at times.. However, if it's that easy then why is it not clearing the streets in city's and Towns etc of these private residents selling multiple used bangers which are parked on the streets, eg hitched up on kerbs? My way of thinking is you can't run a regestered used car sales business from the streets and surely these auction bought cars haven't all got insurance, therefore why are they sitting on the highways? We have a few of these people selling cars for cash in this town, one is known to shift 10 or more a week! Cash!£ .. So with these parked on main roads for max exposure, why are they not being hit by fines, clamping or being scrapped?
Not to sure how a traders policy works but they might pay a specific fixed amount for road tax so it effectively covers all?
They have trade plates, but many of these "back street" park on the grass dealers don't have them, so I agree with the OP, why are they not just scrapped and clamped etc etc ? About 5 miles from me , there's some guy who always has cars for sale, he's been selling bangers from a grass verge since way before the tax disc was binned, and none of his that I could see were ever taxed, so with NR on car plates now, why don't plod just remove them ??
I don't imagine trawling the streets looking for untaxed, uninsured cars is top priority on Plods list. If they catch offenders on the move the criminals are flying straight into the web. A few months ago several cars on my block were clamped and had stickers across the windscreen saying the vehicles were untaxed. I think this may have been from the DVLA spot checking the area. There are many streets across the country and checking them all can't be feasible. Maybe theres a whistleblowers hotline to the DVLA if you suspect there are are dodgy folk in your area.
Plod has a priority list ?? As lately, I'm starting to think plod does barely FA except fine motorists !!
If you wanted to check the maximum number of cars you would do it on a busy road and not by trawling the backstreets, it is about maximising the use of resources. Exactly.
Why would the DVLA or Police crack down on all these untaxed/uninsured cars?Plenty of us law abiding tax/insurance/Mot owning citizens to subsidise those in Society who have no intention of contributing. With dwindling police resources and the inability to police everything, one stands a fair chance of getting away with nearly everything these days if you are one of Societies takers instead of a contributor.
It is shit knowing that there are people out there dodging taxes and insurance, I choose the side of societies contributor, pay my way and hope that my insurer has my back should I come unstuck on either my bike or my car. Bringing lifes scumbags to justice is out of my control so I won't stress about it. Do I hope they get their just deserts, yes I do. Question is, if you know or even suspect there are wrong doers, would you make the phone call?
Direct from DVLA: Motor traders - exceptions If a vehicle is between registered keepers or registered as ‘in trade’ with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), it is excluded from continuous insurance enforcement. Vehicles you keep for your own use are not excluded.
Fully agree but I guess it's either too much paperwork not enough resources or they would prefer to be nailing us on our bikes...
Fully agree again.. this guy is selling 10 cars a week! From roadside pavements.. so if he makes £100 cash per car that's £52 K per year tax free.. I'm sorry but that if nothing else is fraud ..
We tried that and got nowhere.. someone else fed up by it tried to contact trading standards but the call is not dealt by them instead you have to deal with citizens advice, e.g. Your call to TS is filtered by CA.. I would have thought they have enough to do without dealing with dodgy dealers...
Yep... but I think you will find that is for reg traders who keep their cars off the road and on their lot premises... not Jo public without trade plates and cars siting on the road.. eg not on the guys driveway..
DVLA have their own ANPR vans trawling the streets, they clamp untaxed vehicles then tow them away. In some London boroughs its illegal to sell cars on the side of the road unless it is sat directly outside the house of the registered keeper.
